Strengths: Excellent sound and bass response with movies, Presets are simple to use.
Weaknesses: None really, but speakers not designed for music.
Summary: The system works great it's compact and yet provides a very rich sound, it provides a whole new experience to movie night. It's an awesome entry system, for the price I did not find anything that could even come close. As my wife could tell you, I overdo my research when buying just about anything. I researched the internet, wholesale clubs and retailers for two weeks and finally ordered the YHT-160. When the box arrived everything was well packaged. The speaker cable was thin, but my home was already pre-wired (10 gauge monster cable) by the previous owner for surround sound, so I didn't experience the sound with the included cable. I would definately suggest upgrading the wiring as thinner cable contributes to greater electrical resistance and signal loss, especially for the rear speakers. The subwoffer is independently powered and bass level is adjustable which is awesome when adjusting from movies to music. One drawback is that the sub has it's own power button, so I have to keep remembering to turn it off. I connected my DVD, DirecTV and iPod they all sound great. When using the tuner you can tell that the speakers are not designed to handle music but are great for TV and movies.

Take the time to read the instructions as you can adjust more variable in the system that you might have time for. I would have liked to have seen more digital audio inputs but at this price level I'm glad it had one optical and 1 coaxial. I need the digital inputs for different devices than the one they were defaulted to, the system allowed me to change it (awesome).

Overall I would recommend this system to anyone looking for great sound and not wanting to spend more than they need to.

Strengths: Lots of outputs for various components, good price, lots of configuration choices, great subwoofer.
Weaknesses: No S-video
Summary: Very decent theater system, not that attractive to look at but the job it does for sound is good. Lots of outputs in the back to connect lots of components, like it has 2 optical connections. Just too bad it has no S-video output. The speakers are decent and does the job, not the greatest for loud thunderous music like heavy metal, but great for movies.

Strengths: Great sound for a home theather system in this price range especially when used with upgraded speaker cables. Component video switching is a very nice feature. Lots of subwoofer power.
Weaknesses: The included universal remote wont control cable boxes. No S-video inputs / outputs and only 1 coax digital audio input. Included speaker cable could use upgrading.
Summary: Overall a very nice home theater system for its price range. Like most systems in this range, the included speaker wires are thin and the sound is better if the cables are upgraded. Also, when connected I connected my cable box with an analog audio cable, this receiver only put sound out the front left and right speakers and not from the center or surround speakers. This made the sound while watching TV seem distant and you could tell that it wasn't coming from where the TV was. However, when the cable box was connected digitally to the box using the coax input, the sound from this system is wonderful. Similarly, the surround effects while watching DVDs are very realistic, making you feel right in the middle of the action.

With component video switching, and 3 digital audio inputs (2 optical, 1 coax) this system has plenty of room for me to expand even with my DVD player, VCR, and cable box attached. It would be nice if the system also supported S-video which it doesn't.

Strengths: great sound, lots of volume, great price point
Weaknesses: silver color isn't the best
Summary: When I bought this system I wanted a decent set of speakers that would put out some good, loud sound but wouldn't hurt my wallet since I just bought a big TV. This set is great. It doesn't come with a DVD player like most home theater in a box systems do, but I saw that as a plus because then I could get the exact player I wanted. The sound is great and the speakers are good quality. The only drawback is the silver color. Black would've blended into my room better. I don't want people to notice the speakers. But oh well. Its a great system and has plenty of room for expansion as you add new components.

Strengths: Very Good sound, lots of inputs, fiber optic DVD and TV audio ports. Price
Weaknesses: Manual is useless, Complicated to figure out at first
Summary: I chose this Home Theater because of 2 reasons: 1) I've read very good reviews about the system, and 2)I needed a replacement for my stereo receiver which had just gone out after 16 yrs. Since it was needed for my stereo, it had to have inputs for a CD player and tape player along with inputs for VCR, DVD, and DVR. This one can handle it all. Hook up was easy but learning how to use this system was another story. The manual does not fully describe all the features nor does it explain how every feature works. However, after playing around with it for a couple of days I figured out how to use this system I was impressed with the sound. The speakers it came with are are very good. Since I had a previous stereo, I already had a good set of speakers so I replaced the 2 front speakers with my previous set (Bose) and the sound improved. The combination of the 2 sets worked well.

Overall, a very good system

Strengths: Decent sound, reasonable price
Weaknesses: Doesn't sound too great at high volumes with music, remote could be better to use
Summary: Best buy for the price. Basic system that will deliver the type of sound you are looking for when you watch movies. When I played some concert music (U2) I had to be careful not to turn the volume up too much - it will distort. During movies (which is the reason you buy a system like this) it sounds great.

The remote isn't too user friendly. The subwoofer is turned on/off manually. Not a big deal.

Lots of options for other inputs.

I wanted a good system but I didn't have a lot of money to spend. Yamaha makes good products and I feel you get the most bang for your bucks with this system.

Strengths: 3 digital inputs. Pretty good speakers. Powered subwoofer.
Weaknesses: No built-in DVD. Remote could have been better.
Summary: I was looking for a sub-$300 home theater system with at least 3 digital inputs (One for HDTV, one for satellite receiver, one for DVD player). There were only a few choices. At local Fry's, I compared it with another brand and this sounded much much better than that. The speakers are pretty good, and they look very nice (which was very important for my wife since we are putting this in our living room).

One thing I did not like much is the remote control. If something is very user-friendly, you don't need to really read the manual. I have to read the manual for this.

Also the subwoofer's volume level control is behind the subwoofer. I wish I could control it with the remote. (but maybe there is no such thing for powered subwoofers).

If you are looking for a sub-$300 home theater with 3 digital inputs, this is definitely way to go.

Strengths: a ton of jacks, optical, crisp clean sound.2 year warranty
Weaknesses: flimsy speaker wire,
Summary: This system is a great deal for the price. The sound is crisp and clear. I have noticed no distortion. The sound is powerful and great seperation when watching dvds or anything broadcast in dolby. Some reviews say the system gets somewhat distorted when high volume levels are used...well how loud can you play and enjoy it anyways? You arent going to play a movie at max volumn anyways. There are 2 optical jacks which is more then any brand name HTIB system offers. For pure sound from your cable box or dvd player, optical is your best source. You can connect 8 speakers, multi rca jacks and componant jacks means you cant get better connection quality. If your going to pay 300 bucks for a Home theater system, you should spend a few bucks more on better speaker wires and optical jacks to get the best sound possible, This thing is heavy and I hope the solid build means good quality. The speakers that come with it are 6 ohm so you get alot of the high tones. A switch on the back of the receiver allows you to switch to 8 ohm speakers if you so desire. I didn't see any other brand for this price which allowed this. You can allways get different speakers if you arn't satisfied with these speakers. The speakers that do come with it are good quality and definatly do the job. The sub woofer does all the wall shaking it brags to do. You do have to power on the sub woofer and it has its own seperate volumn control. This is good for if it ever breaks, you can get a new woofer without having to get a new sytem, the bad thing is remembering to turn it on. This system offers many different pre set tone selctions to enjoy movies or concerts with different effects... I have found this feature to be a plus. This system does not include a dvd player which in a way is good. In a complete system if the dvd player goes down, your whole system is done with. You can always get a good dvd player for 50 bucks or so. I recomend getting one with an optical jack to achieve best sound proccesing possible. You are getting a brand name audio company product. Althoung it is low end price wise, doesnt mean low end quality. I recomend it for the features it offers and for the quality. Having a HTIB even if it is low end is better than having none at all.
