Strengths: Great color, brightness, clarity, crisp text.
Weaknesses: none.
Summary: I spent many, many hours researching lcd monitors before I purchased this Viewsonic VP171b. I replaced a 19" Sony Trinitron and have never looked back. This lcd is awesome and will never go back to crt. The text is sharp and clear. The monitor rotates, tilts, and adjusts up and down. What more do you want? I use the DVI cable from my PNY Quadro4 750XGL and have no complaints. I use Pro/ENGINEER, Solidworks, and AutoCAD for my profession and love every minute. I highly recommend this monitor.

Strengths: Crisp clear picture. No ghosting.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: This monitor replaced a Sony 19" CRT. I read reviews about LCDs not being quite as good as CRTs but decided to go with the LCD anyway.

I am glad I did. This monitor is so clear and easy on the eyes. It has a nonglare screen which some monitors based on the same panel do not. I do a lot of digital editting and find this monitor is just as easy to work with as the old CRT. I have not witnessed one instance of ghosting during games or DVD playback either. It also takes up a lot less desk space!

I am using a DVI connection and have heard that that makes a world of difference in quality especially text. This was one of the best purchases I have ever made for my PC.

Strengths: Excellent color. sharp picture, text, graphics, fast.
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: VP171s - Great picture - even with my old Matrox G400. Pictures are excellent as well. I compared this one with Sony, NEC, and others. Best of the lot, and price is right ($500). Tilt feature very handy for letters.

2 Star ReviewViewsonic Monitor -- Great looks but has issues
Strengths: Fast, good looking (to a screen novice at least)
Weaknesses: 5 of the 15 we purchased turn off unexpectedly and don't come back on for awhile w/o toggling on/off. Poor warranty service (more than a month to receive back 3 monitors turned in for replacement).
Summary: This is a great looking monitor and fast. We purchased 15 for our office to give everyone dual monitors. The capabilities of this screen exceed whats needed for generic office operations, but we thought we'd spend extra and get more durability. The first minor issue we noticed was a couple burned out pixels, which doesn't bother anybody at our office. The major problem is the monitor shuts off unexpectedly, and requires the toggling of the on/off switch to come back on, sometimes taking a couple minutes. We have sent 3 of 5 in for warranty and after a month have not received the monitors back!!! Too bad looks can be so deceiving.

Strengths: Everything.
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: I love this monitor. Of course when I bought it it cost 2x as much...ha! Anyway, I do graphic design and I searched for a long time for a monitor. This one seem to have pretty good reviews and I felt fairly confident with my purchase. But the true test was in the use. The color is great. It's fast enough for the many applications I have it doing (PhotoShop, Illustrator, Word, a couple browsers, an email app...etc.). I don't do video nor do I play games so I can't comment on it's use for those purposes. I highly recommend this monitor.

Strengths: Crystal clear picture
Weaknesses: NONE!
Summary: I am so so pleased that I bought this screen that I felt compelled to write and share this review.

I spent hours upon hours searching for the best LCD monitor for games and quality.

This is why I think that Vp171 is the best 16msec response time LCD out there:

1. Every pixel is clear and visible–no burly corners like in the CRT’s

2. No screen boarder alignment/tweeking needed–every line is straight

3. With the Digital input, you DON’T need to correct the screen image (done automatically)

4. No flickers/shades–one of my biggest fears

5. You have 3! cable inputs: 1 Digital, 2 Analog!

6. 2 cables: 1 Analog, 1 Digital – unlike the NEC LCD that you need to buy the Digital (DVI) cable!

7. You can turn from Landscape to Portrait (also OSD changes)

8. You can tilt, turn, move up and down. You can even hang the screen on the wall

9. Light weighted–no back hurting as with the 36kg CRT’s

10. Although 17” and although the optimal resolution it 1280x1024 the text is _clear_, crisp and completely readable

Conclusion:

As a CRT fan I was afraid the LCD monitors have not reached the level where you can use them for games and movies. ViewSonic’s Vp171b has shown me otherwise. Read the points I pointed out – all the CRT problems have been solved by this marvelous LCD.

(wanted to write more - but was limited to 1500 leters...)

Strengths: Great display overall, clean, crisp text and the swivel feature is great for reading PDFs and other documents
Weaknesses: Price
Summary: This is one of the best 17" LCDs out there, I'm thinking of getting a second one. I use the tilt feature often for reading long technical documents and the text is crisp and clean and makes reading online a joy.

2 Star ReviewThis monitor, or at least my VP171B monitor (M/F d ...
Strengths: 16ms response time: no motion artifacts
Weaknesses: Screen uniformity: brightness & color purity
Summary: This monitor, or at least my VP171B monitor (M/F date: 04-12-2003), uses the same 16ms AU Optronic's M170EN05 panel as the other 16ms 17-inch monitors reviewed in Tom's Hardware Guide. As such, this monitor can only display 262K colors accurately. It will simulate the other colors by displaying the two closest shades alternately. In short, as far as I know, the 16ms pixel response time only applies to 262K colors (18-bit table).

More to the point, the problem I have with my VP171B are twofold:

(1) The brightness control does not have a sufficient adjustment range. In fact, with exception of games and videos, the brightness control of my monitor is alway set to 0%; contrast settings, from 22% to 26%. Although tolerable, the lowest brightness level is still too... bright.

(2) Screen uniformity is terrible: medium to dim intensity colors are not uniform. They appear darker over the entire upper-half of the monitor. The same upper-half also has a "cold spot", or darker region, over its top-center. Also, while testing, the pixel matrix often became visible, depending on color & intensity being displayed. Visually speaking, it's like noticing a darker grid (or "+" pattern) splitting the screen into into 4 equal regions.

This grid visibility could be inherent of the M170EN05 panel, and may not be entirely avoidable. But the darker upper-half did warrant me another VP171B monitor, which I'm still waiting for.

Strengths: Smart, sleek design - ideal for dual display setup
Weaknesses: Very poor panel quality and viewing angle
Summary: I am now on my 3rd VP171b-2 (The 8ms version). My first panel arrived with 1 white pixels showing and a dead sub pixel, so I called ViewSonic and they replaced it. The one they sent me had 3 colour pixels out! I called them up again (ultra peed off) and they told me that I couldn't have a replacement on that one because the panel is alowed 3 dead sub pixels! The following morning, when I turned my panel on, low and behold another sub pixel had gone and I also had a white pixel showing! So they had to replace it! I just recieved my 3rd monitor and guess what.... there's a pixel out!
