Strengths: Wide outlets for AC adapters, smaller/lighter form factor, more battery-backed outlets, "energy saving"
Weaknesses: More expensive than prior R-series model
Summary: The APC BE550G is a new version of the R-series "surge-protector" form-factor battery backup. It's a bit smaller and lighter than the R-series model it replaces, though it's a bit more expensive than the R-series. It's also supposed to be more energy saving, as it powers-down unused devices to save electricity and money. There's four battery backed outlets, up from three in prior models, and there's wider outlets for AC adapters. Overall, it's a very well-done battery backup for home users.

Strengths: Green UPS, enough outlets for typical pc
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: I am using this UPS for a Home Server/HTPC computer and am very happy with it. It uses 15% less power than an older APC 500VA that I have. There are plenty of outlets and should be enough for most users. Be aware that half are not battery backed so plan accordingly. It comes with software to monitor the UPS and most importantly shut down the PC in the event of an extended power outage.

2 Star ReviewDisappointed
Strengths: Attractive (for a UPS), notification, electronically advanced
Weaknesses: not enough power output
Summary: I thought that a 550VAR UPS would have been sufficient for my purposes, but the UPS would trip as soon as power was removed from the wall. Some soft start technology would have helped with my problem (running a VERY small water pump).
