Strengths: Clear sound, good power, adequate output from subwoofer, easy to set up, 5-disc changer, fairly compact
Weaknesses: Allows for only one audio input source, no dial control for subwoofer
Summary: Awesome sound for our apartment living room- everything is crystal clear and the surround sound works great! The bass seems adequate- I wish there were a dial control though- instead there is a type of "bass boost" on/off switch. I'm not sure how this system would do in a larger room setting, but for our purposes it works wonderfully. It plays mp3's, DVD+R's, as well as typical CD and DVD media. The system puts out Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, as well as a bunch of simulated surround sound effects and some meant for certain types of music (such as rock, pop, and jazz- I'm not too sure how different the settings really are...)
The only change I would make are the number of audio inputs into the system- this one only has a single audio input (typical RCA input- there is also a component video input). This is kind of a bugger if you have more than one thing you want to plug into it, such as a satellite receiver and a VCR or a video game console for instance. In our case, we ended up connecting the satellite and the VCR to the television, and then the television to theater system. I hope we're not losing too much of the audio signal with this connection scheme! Anyways, this is a great system at a great price (ended up paying about $200) that will definitely meet your needs if you are living in an apartment or a small house!
