Excellent sound quality but awful cables quality.
Strengths: Amazing Sound quality, deep bass, lightweight, good design and brings true comfort to the ears.
Weaknesses: Disintegrating cables. They do not resist the hot weather (I live in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil).
Summary: 2006-01-18 08:55:37 The phone cables start to disintegrate 2 months after purchase. Now the wires are all exposed but I’m still using the earphones because of its superb sound performance. I changed my previous evaluation from 5 stars to a poor 1 star rate since it is unacceptable to buy a product that disintegrates. I recommend that SONY changes the cables rubber material and launch a new product with the same good design as soon as possible!

Strengths: Good price, deep bass, nice design, light and very comfortable, amazing performance.
Weaknesses: none so far.
Summary: 2005-11-25 10:44:09 This is truly the best earphone I have used so far. It is better than EX71 because it fits around the ear - you actually don't feel it. Amazing performance for the price. It is the best choice for using with iPOD and other Mp3 players. Try it hear and feel the difference.

Disintegrating cable
Strengths: Great sound, very comfortable
Weaknesses: The rubbery cable disintegrates
Summary: 2005-08-11 20:44:26 I bought a couple of sony headphones MDR-EX81, one for Christmas (last year), and the other one 3-4 months ago. The sound is great, but in both headphones the sweat is disintegrating the rubber in the longer cord (the one hanging in the neck), breaking it in pieces, and showing the electrical cables inside

Strengths: Great sound, affordable, comfortable
Weaknesses: Can't wear glasses with these headphones
Summary: These headphones are definitely a step up from the ones that come with the iPod, but if you wear glasses, these might not be for you. Otherwise, they are very comfortable and sound great.

Strengths: Unbelievable sound -- like a full stereo -- best I have ever heard in headphones period.
Weaknesses: Let you know when I find one (although I do not really like the earclips)
Summary: Everything sounds amazing on these -- Sex Pistols, Brahms, Alice Deejay, Tupac. Bass is very balanced.
compared them to the IPOD (HP version) ear buds, as well as a cheap Coby earbuds and the Sony MDR-ED21LP (Bass Booster). No comparison. At all. Worth the $35 (worth twice that).
Is somewhat noise cancelling. When they are on, you cannot hear anything other than the music; when off, however, you can hear the TV etc. Have yet to try them on an airplane and see if they do cancel out the background noise as others have said, but even if not, I am happy.
Although I do not really like earclips, these are incredibly comfortable (they do not dig into your ears) at all and keep the earbuds perfectly positioned. They come with several different buds, so oan find a perfect fit.

Strengths: Sound... Wow!!
Weaknesses: Cord construction... poor!
Summary: These are the best sounding small headphones I've ever listened to. The deep bass is simply amazing! Why can't Sony figure out how to make a cord that lasts? My cord was messed up within a month of purchase... I'm just keeping the phones and will probably wire up lamp cords to make it work!

Strengths: super clear and powerful bass, cool shape, light weight
Weaknesses: wire not long enough
Summary: 2005-06-04 18:53:56 After I bought this pair of earphones, I found I like them so much, not only for the extremely clear sound and powerfulbase, but also for the cool looking. Another special design is the ear hanging hook. Also they're light weighted and easy for carrying around. I like them so much.

I don't know if I would buy these again, they are ...
Strengths: VERY comfortable (no ear fatigue after 4+ hours of use), stylish, lightweight, 3 different sized ear pieces allow for perfect fit.
Weaknesses: volume level is lower than that of the ipod earbuds, I do not feel like the sound is a significant improvment over the ipod earbuds, weak bass
Summary: 2005-05-16 23:16:31 I don't know if I would buy these again, they are very comfortable but I think I would just spend the extra money on a pair of shures or etymotics and really get an improvement in sound quality. I would recommend sampling a pair before purchasing (if possible). Take all headphone reviews with a grain of salt, everyone's ears vary... Also of interest, the headphone chord is not of an even Y-design. The chord splits just before left earpiece, so that the chord to the right earpiece is about a foot and ahalf long while the left side chord is about four inches. Maybe the right chord is intended to wrap behind the neck? I like the design but it does make wrapping/unwraping the headphones for storage a little more tangle prone.

Save Your Money
Strengths: Comfortable to wear. Hard storage case that is especially nice for keeping in a book bag.
Weaknesses: Probably less bass than the stock ipod earphones.
Summary: I bought these earphones before a trip overseas. I wanted something that stayed in the ears better and something that would be comfortable to wear for an extended period of time. While these do that, they are not the earphones that the reviews led me to believe they were. In fact, I would rate the ipod earphones higher. This of course is a real disappointment for an otherwise well-designed pair of headphones. The split cord is uneven but it is designed purposefully for the cord to go behind the neck which I find quite nice. Overall, these are not an upgrade from the stock headphones. These are not even a move sideways with regards to audio quality, they are a step back. Either spend more money and get a quality pair of headphones from Shure or Etymotics or stick with the headphones that come with your ipod.

Strengths: sound is great.
Weaknesses: fitting for around the ear
Summary: The plastic fitting that goes around your ear doesn't shape or form in any way to your ear. It is very rigid and makes the earpiece feel like it is going to fall out. If it was made of a more flexible material that could form or shape around the ear it would make for a better product. Also the length adjustment for the two sides is awkward in having one side longer than the other. The sound is great and the durability is good. Great for exercise.

Strengths: Fit, style
Weaknesses: Bass
Summary: I got these as a replacement to the standard ipod mini headphones and wow, what a difference. No only is sound quality better but I enjoy using the ipod so much more. The old ones would really hurt my ears after 10 minutes. These I can wear for hours with no pain. Great deal for the price.

Strengths: Low price. Well balanced sound.
Weaknesses: Weak elastic cover for wire
Summary: 2005-07-14 00:31:51 This ear bud looks to have weak power boost because the volume is smaller than Sennheiser PX-200 headphone at the same volume level setting. But the sound quality is not bad when the volume level increases. The base sound is not awesome but I think it is enough and the sound is well balanced. The ear guide is a little bigger than my ear so it cannot help to hold the ear bud in my ear.

Strengths: Sound, bass.
Weaknesses: Hook around ear does not fit me well.
Summary: I own the MDR-EX71's which sound great. Only annoying thing was the short cord and the extension cord was too long and got in the way while working out. These MDR-EX81's sound just as good as the '71's and have a nice length 1 piece cord. The hook that goes around the ear does not seem to fit me well though.

Strengths: Good treble and base if put the right way. 3 different size ear buds. Nice accessory cases.
Weaknesses: The ear hooks should be more adjustable. They may be too big for some, making it very hard to wear nicely.
Summary: Overall, I prefer this one over the ex71sl and the quality of the base has improved compared to that. I would have preferred the design of ex71sl version since the ear hooks did not fit me well. It also takes special care to put in the right way. If it is done just right, the sound quality is awesome! But often times, if not inserted right, the sound is no different if not worse than regular earphones. I did not find a problem with it and wearing glasses. Overall, I'm very pleased with the product.
