Strengths: Small, light, and compact digital SLR. Great for vacations, hiking, etc. Mine has survived a 4 foot drop onto concrete, with no damage.
Weaknesses: Doesn't have self cleaning sensor
Summary: The camera can shoot ISO1600 with a reasonable amount of grain/noise. That means you can shoot indoors without flash, getting good candid shots without drawing attention to yourself. Naturally lit shots are also more pleasing to the eye.
The 8 megapixel sensor delivers plenty of resolution for post editing on a PC and printing in ginormous sizes. The Rebel XT starts up instantaneously, well, actually like 0.2 seconds.
Canon also did a good job by making the shutter have absolute priority over everything else. For example, if you are reviewing shots, and then see something you want to shoot. Just aim and hit the shutter button, and the Rebel XT will take the shot, no matter what mode you are in etc.
The Rebel XT kit comes with a wide angle zoom lens. This lens is great for taking pictures of large tables at dinner parties and large groups. Bundled with the kit is pretty good software, including a photo browser that allows you to assign star values to photos, and the ability to filter based on the star values later. But hey, you won't shoot bad pics, right?
The Rebel XT will satisfy pretty much all customers, and even the nit-pickers. You'll get great value when you buy the XT. If I had to do it all over, I would buy the Rebel XT again without hesitation.
