Strengths: Great features, like the Auto-widescreen format to make those Widescreen DVD's fill the screen. Menu is great, remote control is very well designed and has good range across my 26 foot family room.
Weaknesses: Had a little bit of trouble reading DVD-R discs using variable ratio in DVD2OneX ...although I'm not sure this is the problem, it seems to reoccur whenever I play a DVD-R that hits 9.8Mbps or higher.
Summary: If you're not burning your own DVD-R's, this is a GREAT dvd player which boasts excellent features... but if you ARE, I've done a lot of research and testing and I find that the Apex AD-2600 is the most versatile, good looking, and cost effective machine available at under $60 grand total from most vendors.

Strengths: Plays commercial DVDs well, good feature collection.
Weaknesses: DVD-R play is touchy -- won't play most correctly, even though product is advertised to do so.
Summary: I bought this DVD player for my parents, so they could view home movies of their grandkids that I recorded on DVD-R media. The specifications of the SV-N40BK state quite clearly that this player can play DVD-R media. Upon setting the player up, we discovered that the XV-N40BK was extremely touchy concerning play of DVD-R recordings. A few play without problem, some play only partially through the disk and then freeze, and some won't play at all. The same disks this machine wouldn't play were then tested in my own Sony player and the Toshiba player that my inlaws own, where they played just fine. I tried contacting JVC's consumer help line for advice, but the person who answered could only refer me to a web site with general advice on recording DVD-Rs. He suggested that if the machine couldn't play my media, it must be due to the way they were recorded, and that the company didn't guarantee compatability. Unable to use the machine for the purpose I purchased it for, I returned it to the retail site and replaced it with a Sony that plays all of the DVD-Rs that I made without a single problem.

Bottom line -- if you're purchasing this machine to watch commercial recordings, you'll probably be pleased. If you want to be able to watch DVD-Rs that you've made, buy another brand.

Strengths: Image quality, fast start, quality of build, nice remote
Weaknesses: none so far.
Summary: I bought the JVC XV-N44SL, because the JVC XV-N40SL was out of stock. They are the same unit, with different color cases, the 40 being black. For the price, this is a great DVD player. The ability to switch prgressive on and off with a hard switch is nice feature, particularly since my TV doesn't decode progressive signals. I am well pleased with my purchase.

Strengths: very slim profile, can set preferences on screen, great picture quality
Weaknesses: none
Summary: I have only owned it for a few days, but I really like the player. The picture and audio are terrific, and it plays every type of media I have. Has component outputs also, which many dvd players this price do not have. I highly recommend it.
