Strengths: Smaller and lighter than a laptop computer, writes to CD & compact flash, great variety of inputs & outputs, AC power adapter is included, has pitch correction, excellent guitar and vocal effects!
Weaknesses: Doesn't internally convert music to mp3 files, but USB connection can send files to a PC for easy conversion. Compatible only with the slower, first-generation compact flash cards.
Summary: I purchased the Boss BR-900CD digital audio workstation after considering the Zoom H4, Boss Micro BR, and Boss BR-600. I chose the Boss BR-900CD for its sturdy and compact design, high-quality recording capabilities, RCA inputs, and the inclusion of an AC power adapter. This digital recorder is loaded with features, and is ready to use right out of the box! The built-in chromatic tuner is very convenient; and the multitude of effects combines Boss guitar, bass, and vocal processing units into a single package! The Boss BR-900CD's features produce a studio-quality CD, from recording to mastering!
For added accessories, I highly recommend a 1GB first-generation compact flash card for plenty of recording time and storage. The optional expression pedal (I use the Boss FV-500L) is also well-worth picking up for use with the wah, pitch shifting, and volume effects. The Boss BR-900CD will fit into most standard laptop computer cases, so choose one that provides good protection and pockets for your recording accessories. This recorder is built as solid as a Boss stompbox, and its retail box is perfect for carrying it around in; so purchasing a case for the BR-900CD isn't extremely necessary.
Be prepared to do some studying, as the product manual is 200 pages (but with plenty of illustrations). A DVD manual is available from Boss, which takes you step-by-step through every single feature of the BR-900CD; which might be preferred.
Overall, this product is an excellent value for the features and capabilities it provides. Value-wise, I would even recommend it over its big brothers, the Boss BR-1200CD and the Boss BR-1600CD. The Boss BR-900CD offers all the features of its more-expensive counterparts, but in a smaller recording package of eight tracks. I highly recommend this product!
