Linksys CABLE/DSL RTR 802.11G COMPACT

Linksys CABLE/DSL RTR 802.11G COMPACT

(MPN: WRT54GC)
Description: The Wireless-G compact router is really 3 devices in 1 box. First, there's a wireless access point, which lets you connect Wireless-G (802.11g) and Wireless-B (802.11b) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/1.... Read More

Strengths: small, sleek, portable, easy to configure, great range
Weaknesses: runs hot, no carrying case
Summary: I originally bought this router for use as a replacement for my old 802.11b router, but now intend to take it with me when I travel.

Initially, I thought it would be cool to have a small wireless router and was not worried about range because I live in a one-bedroom apartment. However, I've found that the range on this router is really quite nice. I brought it with me to my friend's house when he was having trouble with his wirless network and we found that the range on this little guy was just as good as his older D-Link rounter which had an external antenna.

Set up is a breeze, as is the case with most wireless routers these days. The unit supports WPA2--the strongest encryption protocol, which is good for peace of mind. I have been using the router for a while now and even with BitTorrent downloads proceeding at max capacity, I haven't had one lock up. I'd definitely recommend this router.

Strengths: modern, slimmer, lighter, and sexier design than WRT54G(S). great performance in close range
Weaknesses: signal fades faster than WRT54G(s) at longer distance
Summary: overall, this is great router for its size and design. of course this one performs just as good as WRT54G although the chipset is known to be different.

I liked the sexier looking body while disappointed at its signal strength at somewhat mid-far distance.

if you are using this mostly inside of your house and just outside of your house, this is a great small router that can perform very well for you needs.

Strengths: -Performance is exceptional -Range is very good for a compact -Size! Fits in the palm of your hand -Uses similar hardware as its older sibling, the immensely popular WRT54G Router -Functionality
Weaknesses: -Range is not as good as its older sibling, the WRT54G, but pretty darn close -Heat: router gets quite hot after extended use
Summary: I took this router out for a REAL road test as part of my business work.

Test 1, Day 1: At home, in my apartment

-I have a DSL Line at home, which I share with my laptop, and my desktop computer. This router was able to provide a sustained 32 mbps throughput, without an external antenna, from the second story of my house to both of my computers (in the same room). When I walked outside the front door with my laptop, with an atheros super G wireless card, this baby was still able to put out an amazing 20 mbps, from nearly 150 feet away, through several walls, and without an external antenna.

Test 2, Day 3: In the hotel

-I had a meeting in another district, and had some work to do with my laptop overnight. I stayed in a hotel which provided free (wired) internet access. What a great opportunity to test this linksys router out! I plugged it in my hotel room, and was still able to stay connected at my colleague's room next door at 40+ mbps (through 2 walls). But get this: I was able to go to the roof deck, 2 floors up, and still stay connected at 20 mbps sustained. Definitely amazing to me.

Conclusion:

I love this router and it is definitely a keeper. It gets the job done WELL in such a small form factor.

Strengths: 1) Good Technical support, they will help you 2) Easy to use 3) Very compact, and it doesn't heat up as one would expect it to. 4) WPA2 5) Connection for an external antenna 6) Built in stand
Weaknesses: 1) No manual with the package, except on the CD. 2) No carry case for traveling. 3)Requires internet to configure printer/file sharing, not listed ont the requirements 4) External antenna costs $$
Summary: I would highly recommend this to anyone, because it is so compact and it has great features. You can use this when you have limited space, for traveling, etc. I'm glad I got this, because compared to the compact/traveling router netgear has, the Linksys has a connection for an external antenna. The security is excellent because it feature WEP, WPA, and WPA 2. WPA 2 is the newer security from its predeccesor WPA. Another feature that is great, is the built-in stand feature. Why would someone want a seperate stand so they could just lose it or have to keep track of it? All it takes to let it be stable,is a twist to turn the stand piece sideways. When you're done, just turn it back, and you're ready to take it just about anywhere.

The weaknesses of this router, are:

1) No manual with the package, except on the CD.

2) No carry case for traveling.

3)Requires internet to configure printer/file sharing, not listed on the requirements

4) External antenna costs more than the router.

1 Star ReviewDon't try to use netmeeting
Strengths: Don't know
Weaknesses: According to their tech support - it doesn't work with netmeeting.
Summary: I've configured many routers before and this was the first that I couldn't get one to pass through netmeeting calls - either with dmz or port forwarding. I spent 4 hours (3 with their tech support) trying to get netmeeting working through this router - only to be told it can't be done. Got ping and some other apps to work, but not netmeeting. Still doesn't make sense to me, but linksys tech support says it can't be done. May be a good router otherwise, but can't give it a good rating as it doesn't do what I need - it's going back.

Strengths: Compact, Slick Design, Easy Installtion, Optional Range Extention Antena
Weaknesses: Gets hot sometimes, Optional Range Extention Antena costs you more money, no carring case
Summary: Brand Name says it all: "LINKSYS". I have used NetGear router, but Linksys is the best of all. This router is slick in design, easy to install, with extra security features.

Great compact router for travelling if comes with carring case.

Strengths: Sleek and tiny form factor, ease of use, number of configurability options, robust
Weaknesses: Signal not as strong as previous Linksys routers
Summary: This is my third wireless router in the last five years. My last router was by Netgear, and had serious problems with my VPN connection, forcing me to restart the router everytime I disconnected from my VPN. I decided to go with a Linksys router since I liked the compact form factor and I had a positive experience previously with a Linksys wired router.

This Linksys router has handled everything I have thrown its way without problems. Bittorrent, VPN, Rhapsody, all perform flawlessly with this router. The performance also feels significantly faster than my old Netgear.

This router is extremely small, which is a big plus for me. Old Linksys routers were fairly large, and could not be hidden out of sight very easily. This router is tiny! Not much bigger than a pack of cards, or an iPod. It has a built-in foot so you can set this up flat or on its side.

It worked right out of the box too. Setup for my three-computer network was simple and painless. The only thing I needed to change from the default configuration was to open up the ports for Bittorrent. The interface offers a ton of configuration options, especially around security and internet access. It was a big contrast from my Netgear, which had a relatively limited set of options.

This thing works well with wireless connections. However, the signal strength does appear to be slightly less than comparable routers, probably due to the small size of the internal antenna. You can add an external antenna separately, but the Linksys after-market antenna is huge!

I am very satisfied with this router, especially at this price.

Strengths: space saver, good for travel
Weaknesses: antenna is too expensive.
Summary: Awesome router. I recently upgraded to it from a Belkin 11M 802.11b router and this one blows it away. it keeps a rock solid connection even under heavy bittorrent and other p2p use like edonkey. Connection stays stable and keeps a strong signal for a two floored apartment.

Weaknesses: none
Summary: don't spent alots of money buying other products like pre-n belkin, netgear or d-link. linksys is the best. i try so many other products and most of them gave me a drop signal sometimes. so far i haven't see any drop signal with linksys yet. so it's highly recommanded.

Weaknesses: Sometimes too hot No bundled antenna
Summary: A nice product with a compact solution. It could be better if a carrying bag is included. However, it provides an ultimate compact wireless solution. Best for business travelllers. Highly recommended
