There's much to like about the PLDVD170. For a bar ...
Strengths: Surprisingly good audio quality, good DVD playback, strong FM reception, lots of RCA outputs (incl. separate subwoofer), separate pause and mute features for CD player
Weaknesses: Minimum volume is way too loud, faint noise from cooling fan, odd colors, no A/V inputs
Summary: There's much to like about the PLDVD170. For a bargain-priced unit, CD sound quality was surprisingly good -- in fact I shelved plans to upgrade the factory speakers. The quality of DVD playback and FM reception also proved to be a pleasant surprise. And while I have no immediate need for the various RCA audio outputs (L/R, subwoofer and digital audio) it's nice to know that they're available.
Pyle tried to make things easy for the inexperienced installer, with a decent, well-written instruction manual and color-coded labels on every wire in the wiring harness. Do-it-yourselfers will appreciate this. Props to them.
However, it's hard to give the PLDVD170 an unqualified endorsement. Judging from my unit, the box artwork and various photos on the Web, this model comes in at least three color schemes ranging from plain to hideous (in my opinion). I got gunmetal w/blue buttons -- while I would have preferred black on black, I'm glad I didn't get aqua on silver.
The minimum volume setting also seems too loud to me. Maybe this was done to cover up the faint noise from the cooling fan. Also an annoyance are the large steps between volume settings.
In summary, this is a good, inexpensive DVD head unit for people who like it loud.
