Strengths: Strong overclocker (41% over stock). Heat plate helps to protect the core during heat sink installation/removal.
Weaknesses: Runs hot, even when now overclocked. Small cache severely impacts performance compared to Pentium IV.
Summary: Have had this chip in the kids gaming computer for 8 months. After adding an aftermarket heat sink (Zalman) it easily overclocked from it’s stock 2.4GHz speed up to a respectable 3.4GHz. That is a net increase of 41.6%, which is certainly outstanding. The chip did not like higher voltage settings, so the overclock was done at close to stock voltage.
The system was sluggish at stock speed, as this chip has limited on-board cache. Highly recommend this retail version for its 3-year warranty and resale value. Keep the original fan that comes with this CPU, as it may be needed to receive warranty service (if ever needed).
We paid just $76 for it in February 2005, while Pentium 4 CPUs were easily double that. All in all this is a good value, if you can find it at a low price.
