Strengths: Works over Cat-3 cable. Can be field upgraded over the network to managed version. Lots of features. Easy to use.
Weaknesses: Rack mount version only. Layer 3 version not available at present.
Summary: This switch is one of a new generation of products that really make Gigabit Ethernet installations viable. It has new technology that eliminates the former need to rewire for Gigabit data rates. This thing works at Gigabit, 267 feet over Categoy-3 cable, a feat that we have not seen with even 100BaseT. No more worries about Category-5. WE can deploy GbE anywhere on the LAN without worrying about the cost to rwire. This is a tier-one product, but the managment software is very easy to operate. This basic unit is not managed, but can be automatically upgraded over the network by purchasing a token over the Internet. Best of all, it does not cost an arm and a leg. It is way below $100 per port. (By the way, you can same money if you need managment, by purchaing the managed version right up front.
