Strengths: Compatibility with almost all formats.
Weaknesses: DVD read is rated as 8x but it can only read/rip at 2x. It can detect some DVD-R media at 4x but write at 2x only.
Summary: 2003-04-28 13:59:24 I've been using it to backup data and movies and worked fine in every aspect for many days but found out later certain 4x media like Ritek and Princo would burn at 2x only, even though Nero and Roxio detect them as 4x. Those are the common cheapest 4x media that we can afford but Sony won't recommend them as it is integrated in the firmware. From my testing PC hardware and software has nothing to do with this problem and even the latest firmware ver 2.0f did not solve this issue. Tried downgrading firmware but to no avail. Saw from forum downgrading to ver 1.0d which I have not tried will solve this issue...this also applies to DRU-500AX model.

Software Veritas Simple Backup that came with it did not work with my XP, I've been waiting a week now for Sony's slow response.

Problem recognizing as drive letter(? symbol next to drive-I'm using WinXP) when rebooted with drive connected.I have to turn off the drive during reboot then turn on as a workaround.

Strengths: Reads & Writes all formats; hi-speed with proper media; plug-and-play with both Windows XP and Mac OSX 10.2
Weaknesses: None found
Summary: I just received my drive (from Byteware.net in Honolulu), and am delighted with it. For one thing, although it's promoted as a "Windows only" product, in fact it works perfectly with my Mac G4 running OSX 10.2.2 (firewire); bundled applications from Apple such as iDVD won't record to it, but Toast Titanium 5.2 will.

The drive also works smoothly (speedy and error-free recording) with my Dell Inspiron laptop, using a 3d party firewire PC-Card. I haven't tried the Windows software that came with the drive, so I can't evaluate that, yet.

All in all, a GREAT product, and well worth the wait!
