Strengths: Cheap, fast and reliable. with dual layer and lightscribe support it covers all new technologies
Weaknesses: CD/DVD are expensive, lightsribe software was not intergrated in burning software but a separate piece of software
Summary: 2005-08-25 05:56:10 I bought this cheap for 60 bucks on ebay and was amazed when i got it to see how fast it was. I didnt realize until after i bought that it had lightscribe support. However when i went out to go find disks to try it out i found them to be very expensive almost 4-5 dollars a piece for cd/dvds. Maybe waiting for disk prices to drop might be a better idea

2 Star ReviewWouldn't buy again
Strengths: I like the lightscribe technology.
Weaknesses: The laser printing of the disc can be very light and hard to read. I've owned 2 of these now. The first one won't even read DVDs anymore. The second one has trouble with audio. A lot of audio static.
Summary: I don't think I would buy another one of these given the issues I've had with both HP Lightscribe 640i writers that I have owned. I consider myself a moron for buying a second one when the first one quit working right. However I really liked the Lightscribe technology.

2 Star ReviewThe product does what it says it will do. However ...
Strengths: Ability to burn labels directly to the DVD
Weaknesses: The lables are very light and hard to make out. Wait for this technology to mature another year or two before buying.
Summary: The product does what it says it will do. However, the labels that are burned onto the disk are very light and a little hard to see. convert any graphics to pure black and white as opposed to color or grayscale before burning to get better contrast. If you are buying this for the ability to burn the labels then wait a year or two more for improvements in the tech.

Strengths: Creates professional-looking discs, great overall burning speeds, easy setup, nice software bundle
Weaknesses: Slow lightscribe speed, lightscribe media is expensive
Summary: This innovative product makes awesome looking labels on special lightscribe media. The downside is that right now this media is quite expensive (about $0.60/disc) compared to regular CD-R's, however, the price should come down as manufacturers increase output. The lightscribe burning is painfully slow (1x), though it is probable that future firmware upgrades will speed up this process. I've created labels with text & graphics, in each case it took about 20 minutes to burn a label on "Best" quality - from what I've read in other reviews the label quality is noticeably less when using the "Normal" or "Draft" mode. The included software (SureThing SE) makes creating and burning lightscribe labels very simple, though it isn't the most powerful label creating software out there. Hopefully labeling products will be updated to be compatible with lightscribe. While labels can only be created in grayscale, I've heard that future discs will enable color labels to be created!

Strengths: Innovative Technology, A popular and price-saving solution to manual labeling.
Weaknesses: Brand new technology, means media is hard to find right now.
Summary: It truly is an impressive technology. When I first heard about Lightscribe, I thought HP had fallen off their rocker, then my previous DVD burner ( a Sony DRU-530A) died on me...again...so I decided it was time for an upgrade. Wal-Mart selles this puppy for 100 bucks even. I decided why not. I have not looked back. The technology and how it is "handled" is actually very impressive. I love the way the label looks. After I bought it, I began getting paranoid that down the road, they would release a new feature that would cause me to have to buy a new one. But from what I'm hearing, all this will be handled from media upgrades and firmware updates as well.

Genius, pure genius.

My only complaint right now is that since it's more of a newer technology, it's hard to find the Lightscribe discs at local stores. So to get a good pack of media, I have to shop online. A minor complaint that will be solved as the media gets cheaper.

Strengths: An excellent DVD burner
Weaknesses: SLOW label burn speeds
Summary: I've been using this burner for 90 days now and it has performed flawlessly. The label burning function works well (once you get through the software,) but the label burning for now is a painfully slow process. Hopefully there will be a firmware update at some point.

Strengths: NA
Weaknesses: nothing yet
Summary: I purchased this drive because it's Lightscribe enabled and I also needed a good DVD burner. So far, nothing has let me down. Installation was a breeze and the bundled software works great. I have no complaints, just respect for this awesome optical unit. Burn baby burn.

Strengths: This is a great Drive, I was told you had to buy the lightscribe software separate but that's not the case. this is an excellent drive. Dvd burning is super fast and the lightscribe labeling is amazin
Weaknesses: Greyscale
Summary: This is a great Drive, I was told you had to buy the lightscribe software separate but that's not the case. this is an excellent drive. Dvd burning is super fast and the lightscribe labeling is amazing.

I love this drive and though it's only greyscale right now I'm sure color is just around the corner. I hear that when it does do it in color you don't even have to get a differnt burner it's the media they upgrade.

Though when you use graphics on lightscribe the longer it takes but it's worth it.

3 Star ReviewFive Stars for this? I don't think so! Update - Part 2
Strengths: It is quiet, it reads disks very well
Weaknesses: Unit still has episodes where it will not recognize the DL disks
Summary: 2005-08-09 11:00:50 Having given the unit a the benefit if the doubt, I have been trying every trick in the book to make this thing work as well as a PLextor and have got it running about as good as it is going to get.

It does it's job satisfactory. And still has issues with DL disks.

I will give the thing 3 stars, but would recommend any one to use extreme caution when considering this unit.

Strengths: Lightscribe, fast burn, compatibility.
Weaknesses: I would buy two for half the price.
Summary: This drive is great. I've had lite-on, hp and plextor drives in the past, so I'm hard to impress with burners. This is a straight ahead performer. The face plate is sort of a dusty black, which is not swell, but I've put it into a mapower 5.25 portable enclosure with Firewire/b and USB2.0, so I have the latest technology in a totally portable and strong device.

1 Star ReviewDon't shop with techexcess
Strengths: NA
Weaknesses: No Response
Summary: I ordered a HP 640i Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer w/ LightScribe. I got so disappointed when I received my product. It was opened and used. Right at the same time I was trying to contact them but apparently they didn’t have a live customer service, so I got to leave a message, which had never be returned. So please, never do business with them.

1 Star ReviewHP Lightscribe Burner
Strengths: It's faster than I thought it would be.
Weaknesses: The burner software isn't integrated with the Lightscribe software. I was very disappointed with the results. The label was patchy and very difficult to see. Lightscribe DVDs are expensive.
Summary: The prospect of a neat, professional looking label was extremely intriging. The reality wasn't so exciting. I was so disappointed with the results of the Lightscribe label that I returned the whole unit. This technology needs to mature before it's worth the money.

Strengths: Can be used with all media types and does a nice job of labeling disc.
Weaknesses: Takes longer to burn title side. Does not burn color but I understand LightScribe may offer this in the future.
Summary: Excellent drive, reads and writes on all types of media with no problem does exactly as advertised. I use it as a backup drive and LightScribe for special jobs but would not hesitate to make it my main burber.
