Strengths: Sharp sound, useful features, mp3, simple layout
Weaknesses: Display, Display, Display
Summary: 2006-01-13 18:01:55 The main reason why I bought this head unit was to avoid having to reload CDs in the trunk. MP3 discs hold about 12 hours of music, which is 4 hours more than what my 6 CD changer would allow me - but on one disc. Plus I can organize my files into folders and have randomized play.

Like everyone has said, don't be fooled by the 18x4W output. I was looking for something that would be loud but not too loud, and I got it. I kept my stock speakers in my 1999 C230 MB and this radio is louder than the factory one at 3/4 volume. Half volume is the setting I enjoy for my music (i.e. Rage, Nirvana, Chevelle, Papa Roach) - loud but not painfully loud. It is not hooked up to any amps, and it powers 8 speakers. I was leery to have this installed in a Mercedes, but my installers did a good job.

CDs are easy to insert without a flip-screen. Accepts CD-Rs and RWs. If you are in to overburning, this player will accept overburnt 700mb CDs. Don't overburn CD-RWs though b/c they can't be overburned when rewritten and erasing them scratches em up.

I was severely undecided between this and the Pioneer DEH-P470MP (Premier) but I chose this one for one main reason: mute button. No more rotating the volume knob when the cell phone rings. Just push the button and the music goes down to level 1. When you press it again, the volume gradually elevates back to the level you had it at. This is a great feature too because when you turn on the car it does the same and doesn't blast you out at 7am with loud music you were listening to last night. You can stop it as it climbs to save yourself a headache.

Display - not the best. I didn't buy this HU for the display. I just wanted something that would work. Scrolling is shaky, not very smooth at all...the letters disappear and reappear in the next square quickly. But I don't mind. I already know the names of my songs and I have better things to do than watch a race car or spaceship or whatever is on those pricey, high-tech displays.

Radio functions - I don't have Serius/XM and I didn't listen to much radio before I got it, so I have no input for it.

****EDIT 1/13/06****

Bad news...I had this one replaced. The display was getting worse and worse. It seemed like the colder it got, the blurrier the display got. From 25-40 degrees it was unacceptable. They first replaced it with a comprable Eclipse model. I have learned one thing from that experience:

ECLIPSE HEAD UNITS ARE CR@P!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT I repeat DO NOT BUY AN ECLIPSE HEAD UNIT!

Sounds horrible compared to the 9847, not nearly as many options...I felt spoiled with my old one and knew I'd made a terrible mistake. That HU stayed in my car for 16 hours and was replaced by an Alpine CDA-9851. This HU is the best. Still has push buttons - no slider thing. Dot matrix display. See my review of it later.

Overall, this player is still highly recommended in my book. I'll give it a minus two stars for the display (it got annoying), but a plus one for sound quality. I'd give it a 4 1/2 if I could.

Oh yea, be a little wary if you own a Mercedes. The Eclipse had display problems too.

Strengths: Adjustable colors, removeable faceplate, nice MP3 playback
Weaknesses: None really.
Summary: I've tried lesser brand and regreted it. I'll probably stick with Alpine from now one. This product obviously had a lot of thought put into it. It plays MP3s for me flawlessly, grabs FM stations excellently too. I like being able to adjust the light color to match my cars lighting. I use the Ai-net adapter to plug in my MP3 player to listen to Dawn and Drew on longer drives. Good times. I like the two different scrolling options also. The second option is neat. Sound quality is great and the standard of which I refuse to go below. I think this player is a real good value for a reasonable sum of money.

Strengths: Clean sound through CD, versatile, no skipping, and lots of adjustment options for those who want more control over the sound out of a receiver.
Weaknesses: 18 watts RMS does not go very far with todays better speakers.
Summary: I really enjoy this head unit. It was combined with eight other speakers and an amplified 8" subwoofer. Plenty of clear, clean sound with a lot of control over the sound stage, bass management, and title searches. This model only has 2V outputs but one would never guess by the quality of the sound.

The 3 preouts give me the option to expand my system should I decide to add one or two more amplifiers and has really made the subwoofer shine. My original car stereo had no preout so the sub was tied into the rear speaker outputs. Not a great solution and the sound difference is incredible.

I did not need all of the features this head unit provides but it is nice to know that I can add a cd changer, i pod, play mp3's or wma's, get an XM radio receiver, or output to a dvd player some time in the future if I so decide.

I have read complaints about navigation but found the system pretty straight forward except for navigating some of the menus using the bandarrow keys. I do not consider myself a car stereo buff so I do not understand how one could say it is difficult to navigate.

My only wish is that it had more power, but for the price, it has good volume in my small two door and has yet to skip which is saying something since my car does not have the smoothest ride.

The only other real criticism is the difference in sound characteristics between the stereo and the cd player. It would be nice if I could preprogram treblebase setting for the two different input modes and have the head unit remember them.

Strengths: Ease of use. 3 sets of preouts. Can read MP3/WMA cds. Satellite radio/Ipod ready.
Weaknesses: Plain exterior. Sound setting needs getting used to.
Summary: Needed to replace my older high end Eclipse head unit that started skipping really bad with something inexpensive but can still handle my current system setup. Picked it up open box for $140. Although not a flashy unit compared to many available in todays market, this is one solid unit with many features for the money. Sound quality is solid, although the bass/treble phase frequency setting is something to get used to. I find myself switching frequently between different types of music. The BBE function is similar to a 'loud' button. I threw in a mixed MP3 cd and was impressed at how the sound quality didn't drop as much as I thought it would. The 3 sets of 2V preouts are capable enough to drive my multi amp setup with no noticeable distortion. For under $200, you'll be happy with the quality, ease of use, and features that this unit provides.

Strengths: Quality, Amp, Sound
Weaknesses: The input requires special Alpine connector converter to RCA
Summary: I replaced the Honda head unit with this one because of the MP3, sattelite radio features. It is definite sound much better for FM and CD. It has better treble and bass and very clear with stock speakers. I recommended this player over factory unit.

Strengths: Very easy to use. 3 sets of preouts. Can read MP3/WMA cds. Ipod ready. Aux In. Changeable color display to match the car interior and many more..
Weaknesses: Wish it had come with a remote and an aux in RCA cabling
Summary: Overall extremely happy with this player. Super clean sound. The separate subwoofer control is wonderful because it provides you with more flexibility in the adjustment. Blew my stock HU away. Had taken a long time to decide which brand to go for and I'm glad I chose the Alpine. Strongly recommended for anyone looking a good but reasonably priced cd/MP3 player.
