Strengths: super fast specs, reliable, very stable, eye-catching scrolling text, customizable messages/readouts. large heatspreaders
Weaknesses: a bit pricey. gets a bit warm when stressed. other than that, none.
Summary: 2006-02-08 01:36:34 Great memory. I've been using it for over 6 months with no problems whatsoever. It may be a Motherboard issue, but the auto SPD configuration didn't set it up at the 2-2-2-5 advertised timings, so i manually set the timing via the BIOS to 2-2-2-5, with no problems whatsoever. It runs great and is very stable. A quality product as you would expect from Corsair.
The readout is customizable via the Memory Dashboard software so you can select from a pre-prepared list of messages (temp, speed, voltage, frequency etc) or you can create your own custom messages. Of course, this assumes you have a case with a side window :)
I love the temperature reading, as it tells me right away when the modules are a bit warm, so i switch on a fan I positioned at the end of the modules to cool them down if they get above 40C...under normal operation they don't get that high...usually they stick to the low 30's, but when stressing them out (e.g. playing Quake 4 or other memory heavy apps) they do warm up. I recommend using a fan at the side/end of the sticks to help circulate the air (without blocking the display). The heat spreaders on them are larger than the standard ones you find on other sticks, and have ribs to help maximize cooling, but in a high stress usage or low air circulation case it is best to use a fan to keep them stable and ensure long life. Why risk damaging such expensive memory?
On the whole, a A+ product from Corsair. As expected, quality comes with a price, so these aren't the cheapest memory out there, but you get what you pay for. This is one of very few items that i give 5 stars to...usually i stick to 4 with things i am very happy with...and use 5 for only outstanding items...as of this review date, this product and is one of only two items i would give 5 stars to. The other is a video card, which is not relevant to this review :)
so if you have the money, have a window case, and want some eye-candy, as well as a useful tool and great quality product, don't hesitate...this is it. Some flashy PC parts are for show only with no real benefit or utility. This however is useful for temp reading, memory speed/load, custom messages, etc...plus bragging rights :)
