And you're right ? instead, there's only a simple, white, silicon rubber strip. That's Alpine's incredibly innovative GlideTouch panel.Just like the touch pad on a laptop computer, you simply slide your finger over the strip until you've found the function you want (a sound guide helps you out). Strengths: Incredible Sound Quality, 4v Pre-outs, 16 character font-based display, Lots of display options
Weaknesses: I don't care for the glide-touch bar, but a lot of people like it. You lose all your settings when you disconnect the battery. Alpine's i-Personalize lets you save some but not all on a CD.
Summary: Sound is incredible. I added a Sirius module and the module that allows you to have 2 changers and 2 auxiliary inputs, and to that I connected 2 iPod adapters instead of the changers. The 9855 switches between these effortlessly and flawlessly. I do my iPod songs using Apple's Lossless Compression: it sounds exactly like the CD and I have compared them by putting in the CD and switching back and for to the iPod playing the same song in the same spot of the song using well-recorded jazz and classical pieces. This 9855 has lots of display options for each source and mode. You can save up to 6 equalizer, time correction and crossover settings. You can name your pre-set radio stations anything you want up to the 16 characters, e.g.: Stephanie Rocks. If you want the best possible sound and are willing to put up with some very minor hassles, this is your unit.

Strengths: Biolite display, Time correct feature, Remarkable equalization and sound processing possibilities, Ability to match interior lighting theme, detachable faceplate.
Weaknesses: Glide Touch takes getting used to, though I do like it. Also, I have heard that the deck may not respond well in extreme heat or cold. Fortunately, most basic functions don't require the Glide Touch.
Summary: I've had a lot of fun with this deck in the first few weeks. I have an alpine amp and some amazing Morel Components running off of this deck, so the result is really awesome.
The Time Correct feature is really swell. For those that are unfamiliar, you can have your mids play in a way that will optimize hearing for one particular spot in the car. OBVIOUSLY, I have set it to optimize the driver seat listening experience. And you can really hear the difference. Not to say that everyone else suffers horribly when you tune it to the driver's ears, but you definitely enhance your experience when you use it! And besides, to heck with the passengers, they didn't pay for the system! :)
Anyway, Overall, I think the deck is very versatile and fun to have. Don't mind the Glide Touch haters; even if you don't like Glide Touch, it doesnt take away from the fact that this is a great single-package sound processing machine.
And that's my final point: this is a great deck for someone who wants excellent sound processing, but doesn't want to go through the hassle or cost of DSPs, equalizers, or other external sound processors.

Strengths: Great sound quality, flexibilty in adjustment by the user. No stupid happy dolphin graphics cluttering the display. Glidetouch is easy to use. This deck also looks great.
Weaknesses: The function button is a little hard to press on my unit, I don't know if that is the case with others though. The unit has slightly strange face tilt behavior
Summary: I have really enjoyed this deck. I feel that the controls are great. You have a good mix of soft buttons (buttons that can have various functions) in the form of the glidetouch, but there are also hard buttons for the things that you use most often. The glidetouch takes a little getting used to, but it is actually really nice for navigating menus quickly. One thing about this deck is that it is not flashy (a plus in my opinion). If you want a crazy, out of control, color display so that you can pretend you are watching a TV while driving 80 mph down the highway this is not the deck for you. However, if you want great functionality, a great display that is easy to read, great sound quality, and classy good looks, this deck is a great choice.

Apline CDA-9855
Strengths: Great display, flexibity with program sources, excellent sound quality out of rca inputs to amps
Weaknesses: when unit initially starts after being in a car unit will not function properly
Summary: 2005-07-07 08:04:27 the strengths do not outweigh weaknessess. when faceplate is left in a hot car; buttons, glidetouch, volume control do not work until cooled. i need to remove and place in front of a/c vent until face is COLD. Glidetouch and function button are on same assembly difficult to use while driving. Menu and song navigation is terrible in ipod, cd changer, mp3 cd, and xm modes. Wait until Alpine wakes up and returns to their old menus. Display is wonderful shows multiple lines on info in most source modes. Buttons can be color coordinated to match your dash. Sound quality is what you'd expect out of a Alpine. GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! I have replaced unit 6 times May-june2005 good for the first two weeks symtoms appear soon after. Thank you production replacement plan insurance

Quick Search for iPod no longer a feature?
Strengths: Great sound as expected; the Glide-Touch function is novel and reasonablly functional. The graphical user interface that allows 3 lines of text is very nice, especially when browsing many songs.
Weaknesses: Still difficult to browse many songs on an iPod
Summary: I am very upset with Alpine because I was just told by their customer service that the Song Quick Search function was pulled from the product, although there is no indication of it on their website. This makes it miserable to select individual songs from an iPod. Once you've selected a Playlist, Album, or Artist, you can only use the old-fashioned next-track/previous track buttons to change songs, with no way of knowing what the song title is until it starts playing.

Strengths: All in one processing,Sound quality,4v pre-outs,display is very nice, glidetouch is a breeze,Color matching funtion is unsurpassed.
Weaknesses: No hd receiver, searching ipod is very long process,No BBE.
Summary: Ive had this unit for over a year now and I am very impressed. This unit is about as versatile as it gets, with built in xover,eq(paremtric or graphic),time delay, sub level,phase,etc....Ilove the fact the remote can be used to choose xover, time delay,eq presets. I have this unit in mazda p5 and the buttons can match the orange lighting exactly. The white bio matches the white gauges very nicely as well.As far as the glidetouch goes, I simply love it.If Alpine would refine this technology a bit longer it would have taken off.The Ipod interface is great although searching a 30 gig ipod full of songs is no easy task. With well managed playlists this is not a problem.I wish alpine would make a remote controll with an ipod scroll wheel.now that is an idea alpine should explore. The tuner sounds excellent as well, reception is remarkable.

Strengths: This unit has great flexability
Weaknesses: I have not found any
Summary: I found this unit to be very easy to operate I have not had to use the manual very much to learn the menu system or for general operation. I realy like the glide touch system, overall this is a first rate head unit more than most will ever need.
