Read More Description: The Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD recorder is equipped with an SD Memory Card slot and USB terminal, which makes it easy to view photos from your digital camera. Just slip the SD card into the slot or use the cable to connect the camera to the USB terminal, and you're ready to enjoy a spectacular big-screen slideshow with family and friends. You can even listen to music recorded onto a USB device while viewing your photos. By interpolating video data using proprietary algorithms, SD format data is up-converted to 1080 x 1920p HD format video data. This conversion increases the richness of the original data by almost six fold, producing the highest possible image quality when viewing content on a large-screen HDTV. The high-performance hybrid digital tuner is capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. And even when digital signals drop out because of interference with direct signal access, which makes the picture either disappear or become filled with block noise, the Digital Tuner still produces a beautiful picture. Strengths: Can record onto dvd or vcr, watch both dvds and tapes, watch one program while recording another.
Weaknesses: I have been unable to set up the Viera link properly, although I've tried a couple of times.
Summary: I think it's a great dvd recorder / vhs recorder. Setting it up was relatively easy, although it is evidently capable of advanced functions. I've also formatted my dvds on it very quickly.

Strengths: It is very easy to use and setup, it has a lot of features, and it has a lot of convenient ports.
Weaknesses: In order to select a drive, you have to search for it, using one button, instead of having one button for each drive.
Summary: I purchased this unit about 1 month ago, and I really like it. I didn't have any problems with it yet. The picture quality is great, and it records all of my shows nicely. This unit does have a digital tuner, which allows you to watch digital channels on your TV. The remote has a very nice design to it, and is very easy to use. The front USB port is very convenient, and can be used to save stilled images to a flash drive, or even to use your camcorder on your TV. The front Firewire port is also a good feature. I really that this unit has 2 Composite outputs, common and priority. This unit also has a Component video output, and also an HDMI output, which are nice features to have. There are only 2 little things that I don't like about this unit. One thing is that you cannot Unfinalize a DVD. I was able to do this with an older GoVideo recorder. The other thing I don't like is that in order to switch between the DVD drive and the VHS drive, there is a button you need to press labeled Drive Select, and you have to go through DVD, sD, and USB, if you want to get to the VHS. It would be better if there was a button for each selection, instead of having to search for it, through one button. But at least it switches modes automatically when you insert something, like a VHS, or DVD. But besides those 2 things, this is a very good Recorder to own. I would highly recommend it.

Strengths: clarity of video from hdmi upconversion on dvd playback; ease of converting vhs tapes onto dvd
Weaknesses: takes a few seconds to turn on, so if you need to record something immediately(like a funny commercial),you might miss a small segment; this is not an issue if you have Viera Link - a Panasonic TV
Summary: this is the exact machine as the EZ485VK, except this one doesn't come with an HDMI cable; their instruction manuals are one and the same; both are easy to operate, and the recorded images are very clear on dvd, fairly clear on vhs; would definitely recommend the unit to anyone looking to upconvert dvd movies, and looking for a vhs player to play or record videotapes

Strengths: Picture Quality; Build Quality; 1080P Up Conversion; Lots of Inputs; Large Clock Display; User Friendly
Weaknesses: Size (slightly bigger than the Sony, Samsung, and LG but smaller than a Toshiba).
Summary: I had Sony's comparable RDR-VXD655 for a week before comparing the DMR-EZ48VK. Immediately, I noticed the quality of the build, which is solid and not flimsy as with the Sony, Samsung, or LG units. - To schedule a recording is very easy. Just press "Schedule" on the remote control and select channel, time, frequency (daily, weekly, M-F, etc.), and press OK. - I only wish the inputs on the front panel were 'hidden', as with the Sony, which gives it a clean look and prevent dust build-up. - I wonder why the manufacturers don't make DVD recorders with an input that's of higher quality than "S-Video"???

there's a problem...
Strengths: good ergonomics in the remote; top quality recording
Weaknesses: WILL NOT RECORD DIGITAL BROADCAST TO VCR!!!
Summary: 2008-12-28 20:51:23 Help me out here, folks. Am I the only person left who timeshifts with the VCR? I do it every day. A DVD-RW works too, (I'm using that now) but it takes five clicks thru three menus to format a disk; which you have to do before recording. Much less convenient than VCR.
I fear I'll have to return the product (are you listening Best Buy?)

don't buy it
Strengths: none
Weaknesses: difficult to understand the directions, locked up, destroyed a older tv.
Summary: You don't want to own one of these. I can't believe how difficult it was to record, never could figure out how to produce a menu on the recorded dvd, only could put on 2 hrs on at dvd from a 6 hr vhs movie. VERY slow to start up, very slow to change channels, and finally, it locked up completely, wouldn't turn off, even when unplugged and given time to "reset". Then the third time it locked up, it took out the TV with it. Now we have to purchase a new tv.
