Strengths: SURPRISINGLY POWERFUL AND ACCURATE GPS NAVIGATION PACKAGE.
Weaknesses: OUTDATED SOFTWARE, OCASIONALLY LOOSES GPS CONTACT, ONLY BIRDS-EYE VIEW MAP CHOICE.
Summary: The NAVMAN GPS antenna/software package is a great alternative for those who can't either afford or don't want an in-dash after market $1500 NAV system. The software is easy to install and do not require to reinsert the CD's once copied to your hardrive, freeing your laptop's DVD/CD tray for other applications. The GPS antenna comes with a very secure suction cup that attaches (and won't let go) to your windshield. The system performed very well during my test drive around town. It kept up with most of the turns on local streets and intersates. The only downfall to this system is that it looses GPS contact from time to time, but it still maintained the road highlighted in green for you to manually followed until GPS contact was regained. It may also have problems finding newly developed roads, since there were not included in the original software, eventhough TWO software updates were available (via internet) during initial setup and software registration. Lastly a female voice pronting you that "you may off the road" comes up even when you're following the correct path. Simply ignore this message.

In conclusion the NAVMAN is a great choice for the bugget conscious traveler as long as you don't mind carrying your laptop around.

Strengths: Easy to set up, comes with windshield mount.
Weaknesses: When using with MS Streets and Maps 2004, sometimes takes a while to track position.
Summary: I was originally looking for just the USB GPS receiver alone so that I could use it with MS Streets and Maps 2004. The USB receiver alone sold for $86+ s/h on ebay and I ended up getting the package (with other map software) for about $87 shipped from buy.com. I have not used the included software but only with MS S and M. Most of the time the receiver picks up your position in a fair amount of time, although it takes longer to get the coordinates. I found that if you zoom out of the map while it's tracking, it'll find your position sooner. Since you'll be messing more with the map software rather than the receiver, there's not a whole lot to say about it. Install is painless, as the driver includes a utility in the taskbar to say what COM port the receiver is using, so you can choose the correct one with your map software.

3 Star ReviewIt is cheapest GPS map system that I have ever see ...
Strengths: Low Price, (for using Laptop) large screen and map capacity
Weaknesses: not support off-line path finding and voice direction
Summary: It is cheapest GPS map system that I have ever seen. It rehabilitates my old laptop computer(Pentium II-200MHz) into a gps machine. Depending on the capacity of laptop's hdd, I can load as many maps as I want. However it has no function to find path off-line. It means I can't find path on a road. Even if I can find a path through the internet connection, it does not give neither voice nor vidual direction on the road.

Nevertherless, it helped me to realize my location when I strayed off my way.
