InSinkErator Instant Hot Water Dispenser - Model H770-SS
Strengths: Price, wide availability
Weaknesses: Cheap construction, very noisy, poor customer support
Summary: My old InSinkErator hot water dispenser worked well for 15 years. It was well insulated and silent. When it died I purchased a replacement at Lowes and installed it without difficulty. Then the noise began. The new "stainless steel" tank was made in Mexico of uninsulated plastic. About once an hour the thermostat would turn on and heat the water in the tank for about 60 seconds. This caused a roaring noise that was very noticeable and annoying. Three calls to InSinkErator's customer support line were answered by polite young people in Manila who didn't seem to comprehend indoor plumbing. After several long waits on hold while they consulted a "supervisor" they referred me to a local plumbing company for "free" warrantee repair. The plumbing company told me that the free warrantee service call would cost me $85 if they didn't find any defect in the unit, and the new units are just more noisy so that is not considered to be a defect. Bottom line, the once proud Emerson Electric Co. has followed the lead of too many manufacturers in making a cheap product off shore to appeal to the big box retailers. They then contract out their "customer support" to foreign call centers that are absolutely useless. Shame on them.
