Strengths: SD Card Support = unlimited memory for map storage
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: I saw those old reveiws on this site and thought I'd provide a couple comments. First, the straight routing is a feature of ALL handheld GPS units. The ability to do street-routing is an additional feature. So, do your homework first and read up on GPS units before you assume a feature exists.

In the Fall of 2003, Magellan added the street-routing feature with the release of the DirectRoute software. This software is also based on current map data and is supposed to have annual updates available.

The comment about 128mb card not working was a firmware limitation fixed about 2 years ago. An SD card reader is still recommended, as you will need one to put multiple maps on an SD card.

Price - the Platinum is price competative with other GPS units. It is not overpriced - mapping GPS units are expensive!

Best thing to do before any purchase, search the internet for reviews. There are many out there and they will help you decide to pick the best GPS unit for you.

Strengths: SD card, as long as you only pay for 64 mb or less which is not stated anywhere.
Weaknesses: three year old map software with no updates, watch your step, poor card to reader utilies, poor tech support, rebate offered impossible to complete
Summary: No routing on computer based software, yahoo has better maps, only waybill point to point line of flight when their boxes use the words like routing, You need to ask tech support numerous questions because of poor documentation, the need to buy a sd card reader and cards your investment is much higher with no returns, I would not buy this brand of GPS product again, go Garmin.

1 Star ReviewMagellan is being very deceptive in their advertis ...
Strengths: 128MB memory capacity for downloadable maps, three axis compass
Weaknesses: Does not support routes even though Magellan's literature said it does. Must buy a card reader to use more than 64MB of memory.
Summary: Magellan is being very deceptive in their advertising. If you read the GPS unit box, the Mapsend software box, and Magellan's site you will see that the Platinum GPS and the Mapsend software support routes. What they don't tell you is that their definition of a route is a straight line. For example, if you were to map a route from Houston, Texas to Miami, Florida, the software would map a route straight across the Gulf of Mexico. Magellan must have received a lot of calls from angry customers about this because on page 19 of their manual there is a note that states that routes are LOS (line of sight) or "as the crow flies". Unfortunately, you don't find this out until you open the unit and read the manual.

If you do buy this unit and want to use a 128MB SD memory card with it, you will also need to buy a card reader because if you don't you will only be able to use 64MB. The software will not download more than 64MB of maps with the supplied interface cable. I had to call tech support to find out that one.

For what the unit is capable of, namely hiking and boating navigation, the unit is very over priced. If you are looking for a portable GPS that supports hiking as well as automobile navigation, like I was, look at the Garmin GPS V. The Garmin supports a mappable street route.
