Strengths: Compact, beautiful, SACD, 5 disc DVD, DTS & Dolby; CDR & VCD readable.
Weaknesses: Remote control buttons are very small and not back lit. Disk changer is slow.
Summary: 2002-12-29 08:00:32 The Good:

Extremely compact and beautiful, with fabulous picture and sound! If you are tight for space or want to fit this into a room with nice decor, this is the system for you. The receiver/dvd player combo is smaller than my old dvd player, and very sleek in design. System is easy to set up since Sony provides a simple-to-follow wire color-matching system. The sound and picture are outstanding in viewing DVDs. With all the latest features packed into one receiver/dvd player: SACD capability, 5 disc DVD; DTS Dolby; CDR VCD readable; and with its state of the art looks, I am extremely pleased. Speakers are on fixed stands; this is a big plus for me since I saved $120 in not having to purchase stands.

The Bad:

The remote has very small buttons.

I have read some criticism about the 100 watt subwoofer, however I find it to be quite adequate for my tastes...especially for DVD viewing. I am happy with it for my CD listening, but if you like heavy bass it is probably the weak point of the system. If you are going to use this system for music, check this aspect out closely.

The 5-disk changer is slow, but for DVDs, I find this not to be a problem.

There WAS a subtitle problem with this system, but has been resolved by Sony as of 11/9/02. They shipped out units without this problem on this date, and I exchanged mine for a new one. (For those of you with older units, I believe this problem is easily fixed...so take it in a Sony Authorized Dealer for repair).

Strengths: Compact
Weaknesses: Doesn't work
Summary: I bought my "Dream system" 18 months ago. When I took it out of the box, it started eating my CD's, and I was unable to get them out. I finally managed to exchange the unit. 6 months later, the new unit started doing the same thing. I had it repaired under warranty. Most recently, 10 months later, I started having the same problem again. Clearly, there is something wrong with the loading/ejecting system. I called Sony, and they were totally unhelpful and not understanding. I've bought multiple products from them in the past, but this one is a piece of junk!

Strengths: Stylish, easy to assemble
Weaknesses: non powered sub-woofer
Summary: I read the reviews and I can see that reading the manual and learning to use the system is very important. The different settings make the system quite flexable. I like the sound. I like the system. Plugging a digital audio into my Tivo made a world of difference. Having a five disc DVD is cool. It does take a while for a disc to eject, but it isn't a big deal.

Strengths: Very stylish
Weaknesses: Very poor audio quality, painfully slow disk loading
Summary: Let me preface this by saying that I am a chief engineer in the broadcast field so I work with perfect audio and video everyday. I say that only to give you a frame of reference.

I have only owned this system a couple of days and I am seriously considering sending it back. Straight out of the box it jammed a CD on me. I actually had to take it apart to retrieve it....Imagine the person unable/willing to do that....a brand new system out of the box going in for repair.

I don't know what the other people writing reviews on this are used to listening to but the audio quality is horrid. There is absolutly no midrange and the sub-woofer is passive, not powered so it is very minimal. The very first thing I noticed, other than the sound quality, was that the volume wasn't even close to what I expected. This is a 600 watt system and I have heard boom boxes louder. Granted there is no distortion at max volume, but for this price you would expect to hear it a little more.

It's a very stylish system and considering almost all of my equipment at work is Sony, I love the electronics. However, this system leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Strengths: very stylish, easy set up, plays all new CD and DVD formats, great value
Weaknesses: not upgradable, strange remote
Summary: I have researched this product for the past month and was worried as many people mentioned the sub-par bass from the subwoofer and the subtitle glich (appears to be fixed). Finally, I could not resist the stylish looks and the $200 rebate (ends July 6) which brought the price down to an amazing $500.

I'm happy to say this product is AWESOME. First, yes, the style is everything you've read and more. The DVD player itself is amazingly thin and gorgeous with a brushed silver metal casing. Set up was also as easy as advertised, color-coded wired simplifies everything. It's also great having s-cable and component video capabilities if your TV can handle it. The clincher though is ultimately the sound. Although I'm not an audiophile, I am a musician and have an ear for sound. The sound quality is excellent. My system is also in a decent sized living room (24x12) AND I have 14' valuted ceilings. Yet, everything sounds great! I placed the subwoofer in the corner to maximize bass, but found that on its highest setting it's too much for me! Played the Matrix, Iron Monkey, the Rock, and Harry Potter on it and they all sound PHENOMENAL! Besides DVDs, it's awesome being able to play all the new formats of CDs as well, plus, the NBA Finals are so much better in surround sound!

All in all, don't hesitate to purchase this system, particularly if you can get the rebate. I can't imagine a component system for under $500 being able to compete with this. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Strengths: Looks & design, compactness, feature-packed DVD player, excellent picture & sound quality, complete output options
Weaknesses: Remote buttons and labels too small, slow disc loading, disc swapping impossible without stopping current disc
Summary: Audio

I consider myself an audiophile but not an expert in the sound field. Something about satellite speaker systems that sounds strange to me. Somewhat artificially bright & boomy and lacking in midrange. (Maybe it's just my imagination.) There are no tone or bass/mid/treble adjustment capabilites, so you better have the "ideal" room that Sony intended it for.

That said, the overall sound quality of the DAV-C990 was excellent: clean, crisp and "bright" despite my room being very "dead". The system is designed for medium to small sized rooms, and I found the power sufficient enough to annoy the people downstairs from me.

Video

My DAV-C990 is mathced to a Sony KV-32HV600 digital TV through component video connections. In a word: outstanding! The best picture this side of DTV. Blacks are black, brights are bright. Flicker is non-existent and there are no visible scan lines even when viewed up-close. Color accuracy and sharpness was also impressive. So much so, that I started noticing how many poorly produced DVDs are out there. This certain model TV seems to reproduce interlaced sources very well, and switching between progressive and interlaced modes on the DAV-C990 appears to produce identical picture quality.

Conclusion

For the money, those looking for a simple, true home-theater-in-a-box system will be more than satisfied. Just be patient with the slow disc mechanism and poorly designed remote.
