Strengths: Easy of setup; Quality and brightness of color; Resolution
Weaknesses: DVI interface is non-standard thus you then have only ONE HDTV Video component input (Red/Green/Blue) PHILIPS Customer SERVICE PEOPLE are really useless and rather unfriendly
Summary: I compared and went to TV stores and looked and shopped & then waited for the price drop. I checked each brand in the plasma HD high resolution 42 inch range. Price-grabber helped me again and I am glad I bought this Philips 42inch plasma with the highest resolution I could get.. Wow! Even in daylight with the window blinds open it is VIVID and the clearity is shockingly great! HDTV is new and my Dishnet work has only a few channels - but with the Samsung DVD HD931 HDTV DVD Player the picute color and definition is the best I could hope for. This unit is a monitor and it came with a simple remote, easy ports, pretty good built-in speakers and a flat wall mounting plate as well as a legged simple stand (a lot now days). It has a silent fan and I never hear it. I bought it online with Electronics Expo through Price-grabber. Electronics Expo DIDN'T TRY TO CALL AND GET MORE OUT OF ME AND THEY RUSHED THE ORDER WHICH ARRIVED EXACTLY ON TIME! NO surprises!
Now the other news. One reason I wanted this unit was its DVI input for HDTV (NOTE it comes with one Red/Blue/Green component HD input + inputs for coaxial digital sound, VGA1 (direct computer monitor input) and VGA2 in or out, plus a VGA3... using red/white audio + yellow video plugs). When I hooked the DVI-M cable to VOOM satillite HDTV reciever... flicker, flicker, on, off, on, off.... etc. I bought a new cable... less flickering but still not watchable. I emailed customer service (they replied that such was too technical for email on plamsa TV to please phone). I called 4 times... each time a different country. No one knew anything. Some said that DVI was non-standardized worldwide, some said I needed another type of cable, one said DVI was for more "modern" computer input and not for satillite!!!! Stupid... Finally, I went on Price-grabber and bought and automatic 4 component video switch box that included a switch for DTS audio also ($179) so I can hook HDTV DISH Sat. + Samsung HDTV DVD + HDTV VOOM to the monitor...Now I have a 42 inch computer monitor, a HDTV DVD player, SVHS VCR, surround sound, and two HDTV satillite services - PERFECT!
