Strengths: Classic Civ gameplay in portable format
Weaknesses: Small screen makes units somewhat difficult to see
Summary: The console versions of Civilization Revolution was a triumph in distilling the Civ Rev experience to the video game platform. The game had just enough simplicity and yet depth to make it a classic on consoles with their limited input options. Previous ports of PC genres like this have failed due to the control scheme but they nailed it with this game. For the DS version, the stylus control actually adds an element of the PC platform back in (mimicking mouse control). Otherwise, this game is identical to the console version and provides a great on-the-go version of Civilization Revolution.

You start by choosing one of 16 civilzations and usually (depending on the scenario) one small town. From there you build warrior and settler units and send them off (in turn-based fashion) to explore the randomly-generated world around you. At the same time you research technologies so that you can build better units. After founding more towns and some minor skirmishes with barbarian tribes you will invariably run into one of the other major civilizations. How you deal with them is entirely up to you. You can engage in trade, sign treaties, and of course, battle them in all out war. You can win the game under a variety of scenarios from domination (by capturing all the other civilizations' capitols), to economic or cultural (by buidling appropriate Wonders), to scientific (by sending a colony into outer space).

There are 5 difficulty levels that range from super-easy for beginners to insanely difficult for Civ Rev veterans. While the limited DS hardware does mean somewhat cramped visuals, the game runs well enough on the little system to capture the essence of the larger console experience and is an excellent alternative for Civ Rev on the go.
