Strengths: EASE OF USE AND COMPATIBLE WITH OTHER PLAYERS FOR PLAYBACK
Weaknesses: MANUAL DOESN'T TELL WHICH RECORDALBLE DISKS ARE COMPATIBLE.
Summary: BOUGHT THIS RECORDER A YEAR AGO TO SAVE ALL VHS I HAD FOR MY WIFE WHO PASSED AWAY. EASY TO COPY ONLY THOSE THINGS I WANTED TO AND THE QUALITY OF PICTURE AND SOUND WAS FINE. REMEMBER I WAS COPYING FROM HOME MADE TAPES WHICH WERE BOTH STANDARED AND COMPACT. SO FAR I HAVE MADE OVER 80 DVD'S. ONCE YOU GET STARTED YOU WANT TO COPY EVERYTHING YOU HAVE OF YOU FAMILY. ESPECALLY HOME MOVIES TRANSFERRED TO VHS. EVEN OLD REEL TO REEL TAPES FROM THE EARLY 50'S WHICH OF COURSE ARE AUDIO ONLY CAME OUT FINE. I WANTED TO GET THOSE ONTO DVD BEFORE "RUNTHROUGH" RUINED THEM. I ORIGINALLY BOUGHT VERBADIM DISCS, BUT THEY DIDN'T WORK. I CALLED PANASONIC AND THEY RECOMMENDED THERE OWN BRAND OF COURSE. THE ONLY PLACE I SAW THEM WAS AT RADIO SHACK AND THEY ONLY HAD RAM. THEY ALSO RECOMMENDED SONY AND TDK. AGAIN, I COULD ONLY GET THE TDK AT COMP. USA. THEY ALL WORKED FINE. IT IS AN EXCELLENT UNIT. IF ANYONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH THERES THEN IT JUST HAS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH A PARTICULAR UNIT. BRING IT BACK FOR A NEW ONE. DON'T BE DISCOURAGED. MOST OF THEM ARE GOOD. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE, JUST CALL PANASONIC AND THEY WILL BE CURTEOUS AND HELPFUL. ONE MORE THING I LEARNED FROM PANASONIC. DON'T BUY AN OVER PRICED DVD LENS CLEANER. YOU CAN BUY A CD LENS CLEANER. THEY ARE ALL THE SAME, JUST DIFFERENT PACKAGING.

Strengths: The Total Digital Entertainment Unit is the DMR-E30!
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: Think about this new entertainment appliance this way: DVD player and recorder + VCR + TIVO! With that said, in many ways the E30 brings the benefits of total digital entertainment right into the comfort of your living room. This unit is great for anyone who wants to edit their own vacation, family fun or "life" videos, or record high-quality video either from a television, VHS, or cam-corder. So if you've cam-corded thousands of miles of kid birthday parties or recorded 5,000 old TV shows, the E30 gives you the ability to edit right on DVD-RAM and then make a DVD-R to view, share with your friends or even archive. Now contrary to some misconceptions, you CAN record popular DVD-R discs on the E30 that WILL play on your buddy's DVD player, or your grandmother's DVD player for that matter. But if you really get to know the E30, you can easily title your programs, choose a menu color, set it to skip commercials, divide programs, all while recording very high-quality video. If you're looking for a DVD recorder that is quite versatile and covers all the bases, then I highly recommend Panasonic’s DMR-E30!

Strengths: Works just like a vcr with modifications. Many beneficial features.
Weaknesses: Must read manual and use trial and error process to feel comfortable with product.
Summary: Very good unit. Records just like a vcr. Enjoy chasing play, which allows you to watch a program from beginning while continuing to record the program, and flexible recording, which allows the best quality picture in a set time. Very good product. Recommended!

Strengths: Easy to use. Remarkable quality. Love the time skip feature. Great quality DVDs produced. AA++
Weaknesses: Pain in the neck rehooking all those pesky cable wires-- copyguard protection on some VHS tapes prevents conversion to DVD.
Summary: I've had this for almost 6 months now and I absolutely love it. It does everything it says it will and more. I had to respond after reading a review that said you have to buy expensive $20 DVD media to record and that you can't use coaxil cables-- I don't know what machine this guy is using but I'm well on my way to making disc #200 and I use coaxil cables AND ritek discs which cost about 40 CENTS apiece if you buy them in bulk. I have yet to hit one that didn't work! I can't say enough good things about this unit. As for the copyguard-- which is a pain but understandable so that someone doesn't start making bootlegs, there are devices you can buy for under $75 that will allow you to bypass it. This machine is everything you could want in a DVD Recorder-and I spent a good YEAR researching machines before I made my decision and paid a lot more than it's selling for now. Andy

Strengths: it looks nice
Weaknesses: DVD-R media comes from several sources. None of mine were compatible in any way shape or form for the unit.
Summary: I purchase the unit thinking it was a great find and an awesome price. Well get ready to spend $11.95 - $18.95 for the Panasonic media you will need to purchase to record it. Can't use Ritek, Verbatim, Sony or TDK. No only that but I got socked a 15% restocking charge from 6th Ave electronics. I just spent nearly a hundred dollars in shipping and restocking to find out that this item is lousy. Positive points: Don't trust retailers on this website without calling first and secondly don't jump to DVD recorders the old VCD by Terapin still works the best.

Strengths: Easy to use, dvd-r discs seem to be plentiful, despite
what some reviewers say. I didn't have problems with
khypermedia, samsung, tdk or compusa dvd-r blank media.
Weaknesses: Manual sometimes difficult to find specific topics.
Had big problem when used type 2 cartridge dvd-ram.
Door wouldn't open-just gave gave code recover then read then open than it shut down. returned
Summary: The recover code was not explained in manual. Took item back and was given a dmr-e50 in exchange. will write review on that when I've used it a while. Otherwise it was an easy to operate recorder with great picture and sound quality. The big problem was the door getting stuck so easily after only 36 days of use.

Strengths: Ease of Use, Stylish, Compact, Good connection variations, Time Slip Feature.
Weaknesses: Unfriendly Manual, Will not Record through Coaxial, Will not Record Copyright VHS, No Scene Selection (Picture).
Summary: I agree with most of the above reports I've read so far, This is Overall a great Unit! Picture quality is great, and many other features. I am just having a hard time not being able to record (Backup) many of my VHS tapes due to the Copyright protection. This annoyes me because I have around 275 VHS tapes I am trying to Preserve and 30% of them have copy protection I can't record on my Panasonic DVD EMR-E30 Recorder. So I would really like to find a Unit that is not so in complience with these restrictions. Therefore, it appears I'll have to wait or use a computer to achieve my Backup Objectives... Anyhow, Overall the Panasonic DMR-E30 is a great unit in most cases...

Strengths: Ease of use and the onscreen display makes it very simple to operate. Discs burn very well.
Lots of features and low price !
Nice unit design and compact.
Weaknesses: The manual is not very user friendly. The title option can be a pain. Discs are hard to come by in the stores and unless you buy online are still around 3 to 5 bucks each.
Summary: Wow What a machine. I bought this months ago and just started recording with it a few weeks ago. To be honest I got scared when I looked at the owners manual its not that user friendly but I am having fun now. I have done about 30 recordings in the last 2 weeks and the quality and ease of use is outstanding. I am still learning to do more and more on this machine and it amazes me how cheap you can get it now around $400. I Bought mine online when it was pretty new and not in the stores for around $550 and the only downside is that the DVD-rs are not plentiful in stores and Circuit City has ridiculous prices around 5 to 7 a disc Best buy and most super computer stores have them for around 3 to 5 dollars in quanity. I only use high quality media and found that Maxell has a great disc for under 3 dollars each. I now buy online for about $1 each and sometimes cheaper. But back to the machine it is great and I wish I was using it earlier. I plan to put all my videos on DVD. They have lots of different recording options which I like such as Fine Play Standard Play and Long play and Super long play for your TV shows and you can title your dvds and make chapter scenes too. For the money this unit can't be beat. My friend owned a Phillips machine and it broke down twice and he bought 1 of these units and praises it too. You can now get 9.4 double sided discs and save even more room !! Only other downside is most machines from 1999 and older won't play Dvd-rs

Strengths: Price,ease of use, multiple a/v in/outs
Weaknesses: Limited formats. limited editing. no firewire or compact flash slot.
Summary: I purchased the E-30 took it out of the box and recorded my 1st DVD from an old home video with in 3 hrs.simple editing with the pause button produced a seamless transition. This unit is just a shade more involved than a VCR..very easy to use.Adding titles was a bit more involved than it should be. If you are looking for a DVD recorder to convert all of your home video and to record the occasional discovery documentary to DVD this is a great unit and you wont have to plop down a grand or more to do it.
