Strengths: Features, EZ Setup, Sound Quality
Weaknesses: Price, no DVI/HDMI
Summary: After looking at the Harmon receivers for a while finally took the plunge when I found a good price on the AVR-635. Although price can be a wekness, deals can be found on eBay on other online stores. At this point probably a little more than I need, however one think I like about this model is the ability to expand (inputs, RS-232, A-Bus, 7 channels, 8-ch direct), the only thing it doesn't have is DVI/HDMI inputs/outputs, however I can't complain seeing as those can't be found in any reciever near this price (also for my needs with an EDTV I don't believe there would be a major difference between the DVI and component).

As far as sound quality I have nothing but praise for the reciever, so far I have be happy with everything I have listened too and very impressed with the Logic 7 decoding which is much better than the other surround modes I had heard before. Also no more muddiness when I turn it up, like what happened with my old Pioneer 810. It powers JBL e90 fronts, a Infinity TSS4000 and JBL surrounds without any problem and the EZset did a good job of adjusting to fill the living room with sound

Also I like the design of the front (have read those that like and dislike), but I like the silver/black and the two line display is nice to have. The remote is OK, and although it has enough buttons and is well laid out I think it is a little big for everyday use so probably going to go with a universal. One other plus is the ability of the remote to learn macros.

Strengths: The auto room balance feature (EzSet/EQ) is great. Very distinct channel outputs with movie playbacks.
Weaknesses: More RGB inputs. With Xbox, DTVreceiver, DVD player/recorder, DVD player and 2 VCRs took a lot of thought to hook up. Still not sure if it is correct.
Summary: I am very pleased. I have friends watching movies and asking "Where is that sound coming from?" From anywhere in the room, the sound seems balanced. I'm replacing a Sony 715 where the pre-amp smoked and am very glad it did. I didn't know the quality of sound I was missing with the Bose speakers. I bought the AVR635 from Circuit City for $699.99 and the next day was up $100.00. The store did a price match from their web site. Richg says "TWO THUMBS UP".

Strengths: Harman sound. EZSet Room EQ.
Weaknesses: Price.
Summary: Great sounding receiver. The Auto Eq works wonders. Adjusts everything perfectly for your room. My SVS subwoofer had some issuses in my room with peaks around 40-60Hz and the HK made it flat as a ruler down to 20Hz.

Wont be disappointed with this one.

Strengths: Auto EzSet/EQ with included mic makes setup and calibration of speakers EASY. H/K quality. Many features. Flexible inputs/outputs. Programmable learning remote with LCD display.
Weaknesses: Could use an additional component input and drop the tape audio inputs. Why would you even want tapes on this system?
Summary: I have been a fan of H/K for some time now. I previously purchased an AVR 40 that worked out very well until upgrading to a new 7.1 home theater system. Due to room constraints, I went with Polk RM-10 speakers and subwoofer which work well with this receiver. The sound is very balanced and direction of sound is very distinct which immerses you into the movie. Also works well with my upgraded 5.1 DirecTV HD TiVo programs and music.

The AVR-635 is a great value that I feel gives you the biggest bang for the buck of higher quality.

I definitely recommend the AVR-635 especially for those building their own home theater systems.

Strengths: HK customer support - they respond in hours and are very sensible. Great sound; EZSetup sets up your speakers. Lots of inputs and outputs
Weaknesses: Speaker posts are not the 5-way posts I like No USB/HDMI/DVI No clock/timer of any kind Has a RS232 port - yikes! Can freeze every so often if you switch source- you have to reset
Summary: Don't try the CPU upgrade the website suggests. Few PCs have RS232 these days - if you have to upgrade, turn off all firewalls/anti-virus. If the upgrade is interupted, the CPU is corrupted - you can't go back to the old version.
