Strengths: Plays virtually any kind of video DVD or audio CD, progressive scan, on-board Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, SuperAudio CD & MP3 playback, Sony supersmooth scaning.
Weaknesses: No zoom (common to all Sony DVD players).
Summary: This is without question a terrific DVD player that has about every feature you could want. Besides playing DVDs with the usual outstanding Sony performance, this unit plays about every kind of pre-pressed or recordable video DVD or audio CD out there- DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R-VR Mode, DVD-RW-VR Mode, DVD+R, DVD+RW, VCD, SVCD, SACD, MP3, CD-R, and CD-RW, not to mention DVD-Video and audio CD. About the only thing this unit won't play is either Photo-CD or DVD-Audio, neither of which most other DVD players also play. On top of that, it also has on-board Dolby Digital and DTS decoders and 5.1 analog output for those whose receivers do not have Dolby Digital and DTS decoders (of which the latter my Sony 600DE lacks). Plus, this unit has progressive scan 480p output with 12bit 108MHZ Video DAC, block noise reduction, digital video equalizer and enhancer, and the smooth forward and reverse scanning that Sony is famous for. This unit replaces the Sony DVP-NS500V, which itself is a great DVD player, but improves on that player with its MP3 and progressive scan capabilities. As I do not at present have a TV that can input progressive scan, I can't comment on that specific capability except to note that this unit has the same progressive scan capabilities as Sony's high-end DVD players. I highly recommend this unit without reservation. My only caveat (not specific to this unit) is to buy an extended warranty as most DVD players have cheap pickup lasers that go out without warning.
