Dyson DC17 ruining my carpet

Strengths: Great suction. Cleans carpet very well.

Weaknesses: Beater head not adjustable for carpet type.

Summary: I purchased a DC17 last August for use on my Mohawk carpet. It has great suction, cleans well and is easy to use. BUT -- in the five months we used it, it gradually made the ends of the carpet fiber fuzzy and sucks out more than a canister of carpet fiber with each use. I think it would work great for a short, tight weave carpet but I would never use one again. Since discovering the problem, I have heard the same complaint from other owners and carpet sales people.

Great product

Strengths: Amazing suction, clean emptying

Weaknesses: No where to place attachments

Summary: I bought this after reading the reviews and doing some extensive research. I vacuumed a room, and noticed a significant difference in the before and after. The suction is strong and consistent. My canister filled up after vacuuming a 10x10 room with lots of furniture in it. It also comes with several attachments, but the asthma/allergy ones cannot be placed on the vacuum itself. Otherwise, it is expensive for the price, but I think was definitely worth the investment. My house is much cleaner than before.

DC17 Asthma & Allergy

Strengths: Really pulls dirt

Weaknesses: Cord comes in the way. Needs improvement in cord handling. Pulls too much as you could thin out your carpet quicker

Summary: Have used several vacuum cleaners. Finally my 2 yr old Panasonic started giving way. Tried the DC17 and it filled up the canister in a 10x13 room. When I looked at the dust in the canister I saw 70% of it were carpet fiber. It must pulling off the loose carpet fibers with the dirt. Makes me feel that my carpet will thin out quicker. The job it has done is amazing as it has a powerful suction so I do not use the brush on the carpet. It is heavy but it glides so well on the carpet then you do not need much of push ( like a hoover craft ). Makes your carpet feel like new (for a short period). There are several models of the DC17 - animal, asthma & allergy etc.. They differ by the different attachments provided but the physical machine is the same. The asthma & allergy comes with mattress cleaning attachments. Definately recommended if you do not paying a lot of money. I would not classify buying it as an investment. I got it 50% off regular retail so it made some sense otherwise I would have purchased something else.

Dyson DC17 Asthma and Allergy

Strengths: Bagless vacuum. HEPA filter. long extender arm. Mattress cleaning tool included. Powered spin brush. Easy empty trash compartment.

Weaknesses: no front light to see what you are carpeting. To use extender brush cord must be fully unwrapped. cannot pick up wet stuff.

Summary: This vacuum is a great buy. I had always heard from friends about how great the dyson vacuums were and i thought they were just overpriced and overhyped. But i finally broke in and bought one and I love it. I have asthma and allergies problems as do some other people in my family. Before we used to smell the dust from our old eureka vacuum and with the dyson there is absolutely 0 smell. I can now even vacuum where before only my wife had to. Also it has nice attachment tools to clean mattresses and crevices. I love this as i have a newborn baby and have to keep everything clean.

The first time i used this on my carpet i was amazed at all the dirt and dust it pulled out of my carpet! I didn't believe there was that much in it. I also had one old carpet that i had not really cleaned in 3 years and was contemplating on throwing it out. When i tried this on that, this totally cleaned the carpet. I could actually see the carpet change colors as i vacuumed with this.

The price of this vacuum is definitely worth it. Best bet is to wait on a sale and use like a 30% coupon as i did and got this for less then 400. Totally worth the money!
