2 Star ReviewI have been using this router for five years now. ...
Strengths: Extensive features for firewall, port forwarding, and security. It also has a built-in print server.
Weaknesses: Drops internet connection multiple times each day. Will lock up and drop all wireless activity.
Summary: I have been using this router for five years now. I have read tons of reviews of people with the same problem as me. None of the firmware upgrades fix the weaknesses I have found. I would recommend going with a Linksys WRT54G or for cheaper a DI-524. DO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER. It is a non-stop headache.

Strengths: Esay setup, wired network works great
Weaknesses: Wireless network locks up every 24. You have to reset it
Summary: 2003-02-22 11:32:19 This router was very easy to set up with a 1 2 3 set up. Also this router has lots of setting to secure your internal network but the wireless part of the network locks up and I had to restart the router every 24. I upgraded the firmware but that did not help at all. I have not technical support yet, but this router has been out for a while and you would have thought that this issue would have been corrected by now.

********Update: I have been using the router for over a week now and it is stable now. I have not done anything to it and it and I have not modify any of the settings on the router or in my computer. Now it works flawlessly. What what wrong at the beginning I have no idea!!!!

Strengths: Easy to set up. Which is a good thing because you have to do it frequently.
Weaknesses: Locks up frequently. WAN stops responding. Have to reset frequently.
Summary: Avoid this unit. It is more a headache than an inexpensive way to have a wireless network. Although, this is one of the easiest routers to set up, it is rendered unusable by the lack of performance.

Another note: Its wireless performance is terrible. It is highly susceptible to interference from 2.4GHz phones and the X-10 system. If you have either. Don't bother with this unit.

Strengths: Never found out
Weaknesses: Connectivity , very slow firmware upgrades.
Summary: Tried to get this thing to stay connected.Even was in contact (e-mail) with their tech. support dept.

1 week after I sold this unit , I got an e-mail from SMC announcing a "firmware" patch.

Bought a D-Link 614+ , it connected from day one and is STILL connected.

Strengths: Of Course the wireless capability and great reception
Weaknesses: Resetting something in the software every restart of PC.PCMCIA,WIN XP, or SMC7004vwbr ????
Summary: The setup for me wasnt as easy as I thought it would be going through the advanced setup. Once I began to understand the options and settings everything cleared up. This is my first time with anything PC wireless. The reception is great through the floor to first level of house, about 100', pops • to 0 in both link quality and signal strength. Also picks up my neighbors across the street at 200', 300' connection at half of what I get. My setup is DSL-LinkSysBesfr411-to three wired PCs and the crossover cable to uplink to the SMC7004vwbr-to SMC2635W PCMCIA wireless and to a SMC2602W PCI wireless. In WIN XP I have to go to the Wireless Network Connection Propperties and select use windows to configure my wireless network settings, select my SSID, select configure, make no changes but select okay and okay again. If you had a connection in the first place. Then it stays connected. 3 1/2 to 4 stars really.
