Strengths: Battery life

Weaknesses: Only 256mb of ram and only 16mb of video ram.

The best feature of this notebook is its battery life. I got 2hours and 50 minutes playing DVDs and 3hours and 20min normal use. Note that I only set the screen to power saving mode and all other hardware were functioning at full power.

I read a lot about the battery before. Some said it lasted long, other said it did not. I run the test for myself.

I previously had an HP ze5155 (1.8ghz, 512mb ram, 40gb HD, 32mb video ram). But the battery life sucked. I only got 1hour and 30 minutes playing DVDs and 2hours normal use.

Toshiba uses a 12-cells battery while HP uses an 8-cells battery. The toshiba battery has a 33% higher capacity than the HP battery.

I also got my notebook for $993 at bestbuy.com after tax and $600 rebates. Yes, that was a deal for a 2ghz, 256mb ram, 40gbs HD, firewire, 16mb dedicated video card, 15" screen laptop.

Strengths: Tough, fast and powerful for price.

Weaknesses: So, so sound but that not why I bought. Heavy, but that's what makes it tough.

Summary: Bought in early Jan., 2003. Wow, great value for the money. Even with memory upgrade to 512, cost less than $1300. Can't believe quality of display. Have had several laptops in past including Dell, Micron & IBM and came back to Toshiba. Wireless networking great feature. Use in palce of desktop for work and travel extensively. Needed something that will last. Appears to be big difference in quality from previous laptops from other manufacturers. They were lighter, but also didn't hold up. This thing is heavy and tough. 8 year old loves ability to watch movies in car on trips. Have to constantly look back to see if he's still there. Daughter is begging me to let her take it to college next year. She'll have a fight on her hands.

Weaknesses: Big speakers, but typical tin-can quality for laptops

Summary: This laptop has been extremely helpful to me in the 4 months that I have owned it. Recently graduated from high school and college-bound, I sought a laptop with which I could take notes in class, and have back in my dorm as a desktop replacement. I have had previous stereotypes about laptops, such as they are way too expensive and behind the technology curve. This laptop from Toshiba shatters that stereotype with a desktop 2GHz processor, 256MB of DDR SDRAM, a big 40GB hard drive, a combination drive, and also extras, such as a built-in FireWire port and an S-Video out port for watching DVDs on a TV. The battery life is also amazing. This computer is a killer deal, at way under $2K, and is for anyone on a tight budget needing to go mobile who is seeking a desktop replacement.
