Strengths: Plays MP3s, CD-Rs and CD-RWs; so far, skip-free CD playback. Some very cool features with radio reception (great if you are on the road). Very cool graphics.
Weaknesses: Lots of user guide to read; unexpected buttons to perform certain functions (stop CD playback and turn off unit by pressing "SRC" button). Unit is silver and may reflect sunlight.
Summary: This unit could best be appreciated if you haven't had an in-dash CD unit before, or have an older CD player. My previous audio source was a factory installed AM/FM cassette deck. I had purchased a portable CD player, which had a cassette adapter. It is a fairly recent player, but had difficulty playing a CD-R. So having this Pioneer DEH-P8400MP installed is a greatly superior experience. It takes some getting use to, and is not exactly straight forward to figure out. However, if you keep the user manual close by, you will soon get it going. Then you'll discover lots of features to play with that will appear very cool compared to older technology. I've driven on some fairly bumpy roads, and haven't heard a CD skip yet. This unit read and correctly played all tracks on a CD-R that the portable unit couldn't handle. The graphic display is definitley an eye-catcher. I also like the ease of inserting a CD. I looked strongly at Kenwood and Sony models, mainly for CD player capabilities, and was sold on the Pioneer model. Other models, especially Kenwood, were difficult to insert CDs, and just fell short in features compared to cost.
