Summary: 2008-07-15 14:33:53 I received this washer 10 days now. I've run it through about 40 loads so far to test different cycles. I also own a Whirlpool Duet HT washer which is right next to the LG washer. Here are my observations so far.
Pros:
1. More quiet than my Whirlpool Duet HT in high spin mode.
2. Option for more water and nice water circulation. When I wash 10 fleece pullovers, I can see they really get soaked. The Duet HT doesn't seem to spray enough water in there and I could see parts of the fleece that appear still dry.
Cons:
1. I used the steam wash (not the steam fresh, yet) about 10 times. Everytime
that I used it there is a strong chemical odor. It smells similar to magic marker. This really makes me sick.
2. The highest spin cycle does not wring the clothes as dry as the Whirlpool Duet HT next to it. I washed about 8 separate comforters with the highest spin speed. If the Duet produces a dryness of 10, the LG Tromm produces a dryness of 8. I also noticed in every single load the part of the comforter farthest inside the tub and on the bottom is the wettest compared to the rest. The dryness level in that area is 6/10. My jeans also come out about an 8/10 dryness compared to the Duet HT 10/10.
3. The steam wash button did not work in the beginning. After calling LG support, they suggested unpluggin the power and replugging. It worked after that. Seems like a common problem, and LG knew exactly what to do.
4. Each time the wash cycle changes direction, there is a soft grinding noise. I'm not sure if this is normal.
5. Can not fully open the detergent door and washer door at the same time. The bottom of the detergent drawer will collide with the top of the washer door. The door design on the Whirlpool Duet is notched on the top to prevent this.
6. For an expensive washer, the user's manual is very skimpy on detailed instructions and maintenance. English grammar is also not the greatest. This is the case with many products from Chinese and Korean brands. Compare the manual to the Duet's and it lacks quite a bit.
Will contact LG again about the odor and noise.
As far as reliability, only time can tell.
Update: 2/21/08
I posted some updates in here but they somehow disappeared.
1. LG customer service is an oxymoron. The customer service reps are more like morons.
They are totally incompetent and poorly trained. I personally believe they don't even
know how to use these front load washers.
2. Spoke with one rep named Fidel. He couldn't solved my problems so I asked to speak
to a technical person or a supervisor. He said he can not transfer me. I asked again,
and he said flat out "NO", and that he will just hang up on me if I ask again. I asked again
and he surely hung up on me. Unbelievable.
3. After 3 calls, I was able to get to a supervisor who seemed to understand my usage
problems with the washer. I promised me that he will check with the tech people or engineers
and promised to call me back. It's been 4 days, and have not heard from him.
4. One rep told me about the chemical odor and that it will go away with time.
5. After further researching, I found several sites with LG complaints. Users seem to have
the same problem with CS. Another issue I discovered is the mold problem. I have not
encountered it yet.
6. After each wash, I noticed the detergent drawer is always half full with water.
Posts from other users indicate that the standing water is a major concern and causes
the mold.
Update: July 15th, 2008
For the first time I clothes came out of the washer with a noticeable bad odor. Must be the same odor other people reported. I'm very good with disinfecting and cleaning the washer. The Whirlpool Duet HT that we have right next to it has never has this problem since we owned it for several years now. LG customer service is still non-existent. I would stay clear of LG washers in the future.
