Strengths: Sophisticated, professional tool for photoediting. The same tool that professionals use in their job. This is the tool of choice - both for capabilities and also because it is the defacto standard
Weaknesses: With high capability, comes high complexity. Stay away if you only have simple needs, because this has a steep learning curve. Lacks features of newest Photoshop CS2 versions
Summary: his is the first version I've owned, but my child has used Photoshop 5 at school. My child is heavily into photography and it the preferred picture editing tool. We have owned and continue to use a few others such as ACDSee for particular tasks, but this has more capability (and more completcity)
Some notes about the 7.0 release. The "healing tool" is a real time saver if you are working on restoring old slides.
There are a number of patches from the Adobe site, so be sure to download them.
On the negative side, it does lack some of the newer features of Photoshop CS2. But, if you need them, and you don't already own photoshop 7 (or newer) it is still cheaper to buy Photoshop 7 and then buy the upgrade version of CS2 instead of buying the new product directly at retail (or even at Academic pricing)
As an aside, there are many fradulent websites selling "downloadable" or "backup" CD versions of Photoshop. To my knowledge, none of these are legal - and they are often based out of country.
I selected my vendor based on their pricegrabber affiliation and user feedback - and am counting on the pricegrabber folks to ensure their vendors are operating legally
