A dissappointment
Strengths: Strong franchise of previous Battlefield create a distinctive gameplay tradition. Modern weapons and high tech teamplay features may interested a broader range of gamers.
Weaknesses: Too many bugs and glitches within the game, runs poorly on anything but the most high end systems, too few and poor maps, and poor gameplay balance favoring arcade over realism too much.
Summary: I have owned all of the Battlefield series games, and while Battlefield 2 is the natural continuation of the series, in some ways it is a step back.
The graphics are certainly rich in lighting and textures, especially close up. But the terrain and the environment could have been a lot better, and the range of maps is poor. There are no night maps, no winter maps, no naval action, and overall the maps just look rocky and bland.
Gone too is the history of two great wars. No longer can you participate in epic battles over europe, or fire fights taken right out of scenes from Full Metal Jacket. There is no more naval combat in this game (there are only stationary aircraft carriers), and there few vehicles for each country. For land vehicles you have the tank, the apc, the truck, the buggy, and the aa vehicle, that's it. And an Abrams tank is the same thing as the T-90... there are no rock, paper, scissors type differences between the oposing teams.
Finally, ever since the release of Battlefield Vietnam, EA has been notorious for their customer support. As soon as Battlefield 2 came out, it needed a patch, and after that came out, it needed a patch for the patch, because the first patch screwed things up even more. Imagine that! There are plenty of bugs in the game, you can't change some of the controls, the server browser works poorly, and you can no longer change the video or audio settings while you are playing the game.
All in all, I would reccomend this game only for a fan of the Battlefield series. Personally I am looking forward to some of the mods that are bound to get released for this game, but otherwise I think you will get bored of Battlefield 2 pretty quickly.
