Strengths: Size, 18xoptical zoom, image stabilizer, image quality is good for a camera of this class
Weaknesses: Bottom loading DV tape interferes with tripod, use manual is weak, odd lens size 30.5, making finding a lens filter hard, low light perfromance is ok, but not great
Summary: This is an excellent low end DV camera. I bought this as my secodn camera to beat up instead of my GL2. The image quality is very good, but Canon has problems with diagnal contrast lines, they show strong stair stepping. The low light performance is weak, but adequate considering the price range of the camera. The 18X optical zoom is the greatest feature, works well with good quality. Zoom speed is good, not overly fast like the Sony. This is a great camera to take on vacations of any place you want good video and don;t want to take a super expensive cam. The stills at 640x480 are low end, but don;t buy any camcorder expecting great stills.

Strengths: Size, feel, 18X optical zoom, ease of use, manual control over shots, price, still camera capability, digital effects.
Weaknesses: Tape loads from bottom, awkward when using a tripod.
Summary: The Canon ZR45MC is a camcorder the novice can strap on and film good movies immediately out of the box. It's lightweight and compact. Just large enough for the feel of a real camcorder in your hands. The optical zoom is capable of capturing the most distant action, while keeping the cameraman at a discreet distance. My first Mini DV camcorder after several 8 MM platforms. I would recommend digital and specifically this model, for ease of downloading and manipulating the images. It's a snap, in the totally digital world!

Strengths: Very easy to use beginer camera. The image stabilization, low light shooting, and night mode are very effective and still very easy to use even for a beginer.
Weaknesses: This is a digital camercorder that shoots still images, do not think that it will shoot high quality large size images, but it will shoot good small (640x480) shots.
Summary: I have been totaly satisfied with this camcorder. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a beginer type camcorder. Very easy to use, just unpack it and your ready to shoot very good quality video. I dont think there is a better camcorder out there for the same price. Camcorder has two modes for video auto and manual in the auto it handles everything, usually very well, but for more experienced users it offers an array of options including focus, shutter speed, 6 different videos modes including low light, night, and sports just to name a few. I haven't had any problems with it yet, and I've shot about 5 hours of video with it. I read plenty of spec's and reveiws before buying and this camcorder has lived up to all of them.

Strengths: size, weight, performance
Weaknesses: tape loaded from bottom, poor quality still photos, lens cover never stays on
Summary: 2004-02-21 21:13:49 A great camcorder. Very easy to set up and use. Battery is charged while it is attached to camera. AC cord has to be connected to camera. I would have preferred a separate charger included with camera, not an option. It is a very compact camera. smaller than some 35mm cameras!

Strengths: Excellent for converting analog to mini dv
Weaknesses: Sucks when trying to export from PC to mini dv
causes problems with other firewire devices
Summary: I've tried a few different mini dv's. Some tend to capture and export to and from the the pc via firewire quite smoothely, and some don't (like the ZR 45). Does anyone know of a mini dv, in the ZR 45's price rang, that can convert analog to digital and work smoothely via firewire? marcusosmar@hotmail.com

Strengths: Takes nice still photos, zooms well, small size, video quality is very clear, Customer support was VERY nice, helpful.
Weaknesses: Manual is more confusing than helpful. Not user friendly, especially if you are coming from the old vhs type cameras.
Summary: My main complaint is that I had a hard time figuring out how to use this camera. Maybe if the manual had been a little more clear, I would have enjoyed this camera more. As far as working, I guess it was pretty good. Nice picture & video, but complicated to use. I like buttons to say "play, rewind, FF, etc." But these buttons say other things. I prefer the Keep it Simple motto. Us simple minds need simple instructions.

Strengths: Still pics, DV format, auto lighting adjust
Weaknesses: Still pics are low resolution. Documentation & interface software are poor.
Summary: I was disappointed in the low resolution of the still pics. User documentation is mediocre at best, virtually no mention of 1394 interface - which requires an extra cable. Interface software (Zoombrowser) is pathetic. Overall, I would expect better from Canon. Despite these drawbacks, I am not totally disappointed with the product.
