Strengths: Great VCR - excellent picture on "normal" (non-HD) screens, even when recorded in SLP mode. Good jog/shuttle.
Weaknesses: only adequate owner's manual, not in keeping with Toshiba quality.
Summary: Buy the VCR, don't worry about the manual. The remote is fine. This is the 3rd Toshiba VCR I've owned over the past 16 years. They are the best.

2 Star ReviewI have never encountered such a poorly written and ...
Strengths: In itself an excellent VCR but the weaknesses mentioned below far outweigh the features of the machine.
Weaknesses: An incredibly bad Owner's Manual that belongs in the "Terrible Manual Hall of Fame"
Summary: I have never encountered such a poorly written and confusing owner's manual. For starters the largest and most prominent button on the remote is labelled CURSOR. The word cursor isn't even mentioned in the manual. A call to their 800 number elicited the response "Oh yeah, that's the PLAY button". This is just one example of the frustration you will face in using this, otherwise perfectly good, machine.

In addition the manual, which is in black and white with very small print, looks as though it was run off on a cheap black and white copier.
