Strengths: Compatibility w/ 8mm tapes; that it is digital; good sound
Weaknesses: Still pictures resolution; zoom is touchy (moves too fast)
Summary: Not a bad camera for the money, but would go for one with better still resolution (i.e. the TRV 740 or 840). If you already have old 8mm or Hi8 tapes, this Sony line of Digital8 recorders is a good way to go, but would spend the extra $100 or so to move up to a higher resolution CCD. If you don't need the 8mm size, you may be better off with a recorder that uses Mini-DV instead, as it will be smaller and lighter (such as the Sony TRV-18, TRV-25 or TRV-27). The tape is accessed on the bottom of the unit, which is kind of inconvenient (impossible to get to while on a tripod). Controls are good, and easy to use (on top of the unit instead of buried in under the fold-out LCD display. The 2.5 inch LCD seems fine, unless you've worked with a 3.5 inch, in which case the 2.5 looks very small. Very easy to handle camera, and easy to use. Just don't plan to do any still pictures unless you're looking for small file size for emailing (640x480).
