Strengths: (1) Fast or really fast depending on your USB version [but fast enough]. (2) Ample storage capacity, enough for most users. (3) Low price/GB.
Weaknesses: No power-off switch.
Summary: I'm running this Maxtor 3000LE 120GB External USB Drive on XPHome. Installation was flawless. I paired this drive with automatic backup software from another vendor. I have a backup of my main drive on the Maxtor, and the auto backup software monitors additions to the main drive and copies new files or changes to files upon start up [in background], and at other times, or on command. This REALLY makes the smart practice of "periodic, regular backups" foolproof> > > just set it and forget it. The fact that the Maxtor is External & USB provides another advantage. If your machine goes down and you cannot reach the files on the main drive, just unplug the Maxtor and plug it in to your notebook computer or other desktop. You'll have almost immediate access to all of your files, since it is likely that your OS will recognize the drive through the USB, as a resident harddrive. Compare this with having your backup harddrive resident [internally] on your main computer. How complicated could recovering the files on the internal backup drive be?> > > hate to think about it! All in all, the Maxtor 3000LE USB 120GB External Harddrive is a perfect solution for foolproof backups, and a great solution for transferring contents of main harddrive or other large numbers of files from computer to computer. I would make this same purchase again had I to do it again. I would recommend the Maxtor 3000LE for high capacity, low price/GB, speed and ease of operation.
