Strengths: Supports almost all formats & inexpensive.
Weaknesses: No IDE interface, minimal front panel interface, LCD screen is weak, runs REALLY hot & screensaver is cheesy.
Summary: I saw this player on sale at Wal-Mart for $99 CDN a couple years ago and researched it a bit before buying it. It can support almost every format except CD-G/Karaoke which is a little touchy (I really wanted to throw some karaoke parties, damnit! ;)

I flashed the ROM as soon as I had it home and it worked flawlessley -- the only part of the flash that I didn't like was the screensaver update which is plain cheesy and you can't mod it yourself it seems.

Only after 2 years of use has it started to show signs of wear. I brought home some cheaper quality DVD's (you can see right through the discs) and it tends to lock up and restart even after cleaning the lens -- before cleaning it would lock up and make horrid noises through my stereo even w/ the DVD player volume at 0. But I'm willing to live with that as it's due for relpacment w/ another player than has an IDE interface.

The LCD screen on the front can be hard to read at an angle during the day and they really could have done w/ more buttons on the front and a better way to turn it off via remote. When you turn it off w/ the remote it stops everything but leaves the power on and the player gets extremely hot to the touch which can cause poor playback.

I know I've listed a lot of cons to this player, but overall it's a GREAT player for anyone just looking to fool around w/ different formats and hacks w/o having to worry about damaging an expensive player.

1 Star ReviewPurchased one of these for a Christmas present in ...
Strengths: Ease of use, compatable with most DVD and CD formats
Weaknesses: Unreliable product
Summary: Purchased one of these for a Christmas present in 2002. After one week it began to malfunction during DVD play. I returned it to K-Mart and exchanged for another unit. To my dismay, the new unit also malfunctioned. I tried 4 different DVDs (original ones by the way) but the unit continued to freak out and reset itself every few minutes of play. I then exchanged this one for a 3rd APEX AD-1500 unit and guess what? That's right - it was also defective! After buying 3 defective units in a row, I believe it's quite obvious that the APEX AD-1500 DVD player is nothing more than a piece of junk!

Strengths: N/A
Weaknesses: Seems to have a short life span
Summary: Received same model as three other family members at alteranate times and all three Apex DVD players seem to start to freeze up and lose picture quality after only a few months. I will not buy another Apex model again.

Strengths: Reads everything, best price for the value
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I bought one of these APEX AD-1500 on the recommendation from a friend. I just purchased my second one for a mere $70 tax and shipping included.

This player reads everything, including DVD's from the "other" zones once firmware is upgraded.

Not only it outputs NTSC or PAL, but it converts too. meaning you can read a Zone 1 NTSC DVD on a PAL TV, or read a zone 2 PAL DVD on an NTSC TV.

MP3 works like a charm.

Remote is actually more user-friendly than most remotes I have owned.

Strengths: Plays, DVD+RW, SVCD, VCD, MP3
Weaknesses: none yet
Summary: I love this player, I was told that Apex DVD player, plays everthing but of course I did not believe it so I brought a Sony DVD player thinking it would play SVCD's. Guess what it didn't, I wasted $130.00 on a Sony DVD Player now it is in storage collecting dust.

I ended up buying a Apex 1500 and I wasn't sure if it would work with my SVCD's or my DVD+RW but I purchased one anyway. To my surprise it worked, it played my DVD+RW disk with no problems. Now I am going to try DVD-R discs next as soon as my dvd writer comes in.

The funny thing about it is before I purchased my Apex I emailed Apex Tech Support and asked them if any of their players played SVCD. They told me none of their DVD players

would play SVCD format.

Do they not know what they created?

The best player yet....

And yes of course you will find a few bad in the bunch as some reviewers has mentioned... but don't let that discourage you Apex is by far the best DVD player manufacturer around. They are priced great and they play all the formats needed.

Strengths: I haven't found one yet
Weaknesses: well, if not working and no satisfaction from store counts then that is my reason
Summary: This is the biggest hunk of junk I have ever put my money on! I have stared at Video 1 about all I can stand with the music playing in the background but no picture. I would never buy another Apex machine again

Strengths: Price
Weaknesses: Remote, disc recognition.
Summary: Paid $79 on sale so it has a good price / performance ratio. Picture quality is good. Sound is good, but I have it connected directly to the TV and not to a home theater system. Has trouble recognizing some discs and seems more sensitive disc smudges then our other player. Remote is a little finicky, has a narrow range (must be "aimed" precisely at unit) and only controls the DVD. Overall works well. Definitely worth the price.

Strengths: Plays any format.
Weaknesses: We are 3/4 so far in players. One died in 1 week's time. Remote is a little weak in signal strength.
Summary: This DVD player is great. I threw DVD, VCD, SVCD, and XVCD at it and it plays everything beautifully. For $80 you can't go wrong. I hooked i tup direct to my tv through RCA. It even has digital out through COAX for DTS. Amazing little player. Almost seemed too godo to be true but I have lots of friends that bought this one as well and are happy. Go buy one before they're gone.
