    Product Experience:
    8 Months
Strengths: Can add up to 4 drives, quiet, fast, support drives bigger than 137 GB.
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: I've been using this card for more than 8 months and just recommended it to a friend, who's now very happy with it.

Installation:

Plug and play. What you need to be concerned about (before installing) is setting up the jumpers. SIIG support site provides you with some guides (do search on their FAQs). If you're using a Panther on a G4, you might get some problems with sleeping (I didn't). You can download an update from SIIG. On Tiger, so far, I have no problem even without installing the update.

Performance:

I noticed speed improvement and less noise after installing. Of course, I've sort of taken it for granted after I got used to it. Not until I helped my friend installing the card that I was, once again, reminded what a big difference it makes!

Strengths: Not expensive. Plays well with LBA HD's of 300+GB's. Tiger-compatible.
Weaknesses: No OS9 support (but they point this out very clearly).
Summary: SIIG's product page ( found here: tinyurl.com/yofds8... ) makes no mention of OSX compatibility beyond "10.1+". Works great in Panther and Tiger but Leopard compatibility is not noted so be sure to check with them first.

I'll repeat that this card is NOT for OS9 (just in case you missed it, above).

I've got three 300GB/320GB drives connected to it in a G4 that is doing server duty in Tiger. No problems. OSX's Disk Utility takes care of normal initialization/maintenance.

Decent card. Does the job.

Strengths: Easy to install
Weaknesses: Twisting the ultra ATA cable to attach a second hard drive may weaken the cable
Summary: Installing the card and attaching the cable to the hard drive was easy; all you need is a free PCI slot and a screw driver. Make sure that you have read the instruction manual (8 pages max) that SIIG includes and have the Setting up Your Power Mac G4 manual (to install the hard drives properly).

The hardest part is installing a slave (2nd) hard drive: you have to twist the Ultra ATA cable in an obscene manner to connect the cable to the second drive. It seemed like I might damage the cable by twisting it to make the connection. Unless the cable has to be designed this way (which I can't imagine), there's no reason that the two hard drive connectors can't be facing the same direction.

The only alternative (that I found) for the SIIG ultra is the Sonnet Technology's Tempo Trio. But it's twice the price. If you need additional USB (2 ext, 1 int) and Firewire (2 ext, 1 int) ports, you might want to buy the Tempo (especially if you're short on PCI slots).

Strengths: Installation instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Installed in a G4 in minutes and operational with two added hard drives in even less time.
Weaknesses: None experienced.
Summary: Really appreciated how easy to install and quickly become functional. No setup or software changes needed. A real plug and play operation for application with large capacity hard drives. Would definitely recommend. The overall purchasing and product experience is excellent.
