Summary: The Olympus FL-CB05 Shoe Mount TTL Flash Cable allows users of Olympus E-Series Digital cameras to reposition their Olympus FL-36 or FL-50 flash heads off camera by nearly four feet, while preserving TTL exposure control. This gives the photographer flexibility to make images with far more interesting lighting than the press-camera look that comes with on-camera flash.

According to the specs on the box, this coiled cable, with a relaxed length of about fourteen inches, will extend to one meter (3.2 ft.). It easily stretches to allow the flash to be held at arms length from the camera, and it can be coaxed to about 48 inches without being stretched as tight as a banjo string.

At the camera end of the cable, the little box with the foot that fits into the hot shoe has a lock ring to hold it in place, but no locking pin. The cable emerges from the top, with a molded strain relief. The little box at the flash end of the cable has the TTL hot shoe on top and on the bottom a foot with a lock ring to securely attach it to a flash bracket. Built into the middle of the foot is a ¼ X 20 threaded nut for attachment to a tripod head, for instance. The cable at this end enters at the front.

This cable, manufactured in Japan, is built to the same high level of quality as other Olympus camera accessories. TTL exposure control keeps flash settings simple in situations where they might otherwise be difficult to calculate, or even require trial-and-error. This cable will be a welcome piece in any creative photographer’s kit.

Strengths: Positive locking of Olympus flash to off-camera hot shoe.
Weaknesses: Price.
Summary: This cable allows the photographer to get the flash of the camera hot shoe and mounted to a bracket. This enables better lighting and further reduction of red-eye. It accomplishes this goal well, and unlike an off-brand cable I tried first, has a better lock on from the flash as a pin from the flash drops into the off-camera hotshoe.

Strengths: Well made
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I don't have a bracket to attach to the camera but I have used this cable to connect my hand-held FL-36. It gets the light where you need it. A bit tricky holding the camera and separate flash, but it can be done.
