Strengths: Clean, professional-grade UI. Fast and stable.
Weaknesses: Professional-grade UI. If you need handholding, keep away.
Summary: 2005-07-19 14:03:05 Tried all of the video editors/dvd burners on the market. Adobe, Pinnacle, MyDVD, etc. Movie Studio + DVD is the "cut down" or entry-level version of Sony Vegas and DVD. The user interface is professional - it is clean, simple, fast and v. stable - and suits me just fine. It is a little unorthodox for a video editor, but I had no problem using it and only had to refer to the manual a few times. The results I have produced have wow-ed people. Top-notch product. Well worth the money.

Strengths: Many choices and options, simple interface, good manual and tutorial. Pan/tilt/fly-in/out effects!
Weaknesses: Less stable after upgrading. Some custom options not clearly described... Does support many video formats but not all.
Summary: After using several consumer grade video-editiong programs this looked so intuitive and had so many options (though it still does not allow all video formats to be imported or created). Rendering is OK, and one should expect slower for more complex effects or changes in aspect ratio, formats etc. Manual does explain basic format features but lacks more discussion and examples, however, used this program to succesfully convert NTSC to PAL.
I started using this program with version 3.0 which was 100% stable. However, after upgrading to 4.0 program crashed few times, so I am looking forward for the new verion 5.0, but plan for clean install, rather than upgrade.

Movie Studio + DVD leaves you wanting more
Strengths: You can visually lay out tracks 3 video & 3 audio to create your video.
Weaknesses: Missing some automatic preferences. Not intuitive. Must run two seperate programs to create a DVD. DVD menu creation is really lacking.
Summary: I am converting home video's on VHS to DVD. I digitize the videos with my Canopus ADVC50 (also reviewed on Pricegrabber). Sony Movie Studio has a capture mode but it isn't intuitive. Once I have captured the tape to a huge AVI file (23GB for 90 minutes) I pick out sections of video that I want in my DVD. Because it takes so long I have been just selecting the entire video and then just put markers where different events (charters) are. Then I "create" a DVD which actually writes out a MPEG & WAV file that will be read by the DVD authoring software called "DVD Architect Studio". That process of writing the MPEG takes a very long time but I expected that. What disappointed me was that only when I was in DVD Architect did I discover that project would not fit on a single 4.7GB DVD. I had to "Optimize" the project which means to cut down the quality. And rather than having a option to cut it down to exactly the size of a standard DVD I had to play with a slide button to get it to ~ 4.7 GB. Then the MPEG gets recompressed with lower quality. If the Movie Studio software had warned me up front then I could have cut my project into two parts and written them out seperately. This way I wasted twice the time and I lost quality. Perhaps their are ways to be warned but I haven't found them. So for my money I am disappointed. At least with Pinnacle 8.0 (which I hate) it would automatically compress the video to exactly fit a standard 4.7GB DVD. When and if I find more to write about I will add it.

In short, Don't buy this program. You are throwing ...
Strengths: Easy to capture video and is very stable. It won't crash on you like the others do.
Weaknesses: Hard to use and you need to read the manuals. Does not BURN a DVD with video as needed.
Summary: 2005-03-10 20:14:01 In short, Don't buy this program. You are throwing away your money.
The program is more stable than the Pinnacle program in capturing and editing but what good is it if you can't burn that DVD. Even the Pinnancle 9 can at least burn that DVD for you.
I still have problems burning the DVD. Not to mention that I wasted 4 DVD testing it out. No patch found on the website.
Buyer stay away from this software.
Look elsewhere for other video to DVD burning software if you want something more simple.
Only take the chance if you have money to burn.

Strengths: easy to set up, good demo on how to use it, easy to use, easy to edit
Weaknesses: saving options your edited movie is limited.
Summary: 2005-08-22 07:37:08 I have seen the professional version of this software before and decided to buy the personal/home version of it. Alot of people talk about them being almost same software. Movie studio doesnt have the many options that many of you need in the long run. But it is a great software to start with. You cant beat that at this price range.

Strengths: relatively quick install and boot up; intuitive interface, not difficult to understand; can span the length of DVD files according to preference quite easily
Weaknesses: is unable to automatically burn a DVD without errors after rendering the video files.
Summary: This is my favorite video editing program. I use this
for creating family DVD's from captured MPG files from
family videos. It is much easier to understand than many other programs, and is much quicker to install and then boot up. One of my favorite features is the ability to reduce the size of a prepared DVD program as desired to fit on a DVD, in most instances. My only difficulty is that I have been unable to get this to automatically and correctly burn a DVD after preparation. To get around this error, I have it render the DVD files, then manually burn the files to a DVD using Nero.

Strengths: A great interface for advanced users - tons of options!
Weaknesses: Lacks automated steps for the common tasks, which may make it hard to learn and use.
Summary: After many painful attempts to use Pinnacle products and a few others, I finally decided to give Sony a try, and it turned out to be a delightful experience.
Vegas is a great software for people who already know a little bit about video capturing and editing, since it does not have many beginner-level features inside it.
