Strengths: LCD two-way remote;
Directed is biggest name in car security;
custumizable features;
Weaknesses: Cost of professional installation
Summary: Directed Electronics is one of the biggest names in car audio/security. They manufacture python, viper, wasp, and a host of other systems. The viper 791vx is the flagship two way remote start and security system.
As a self made expert in the field I can tell you with car audio/secruity you always get what you pay for. Go to best buy and buy a codealarm system and you will pay 150. Buy this system at a great price and get one taht actually works. First of all this system is one of few on teh market that uses FM to communicate with your vehicle. AM just has too much on it these days and if you want to start your car from inside your house/work/apartment and not standing next to your car, get this system.
It is completely customizable. It comes in the box with everything you need for a basic setup. That protects the car with an invisable dual shock sensor. Hood protection, and all four doors. Dont worry about this system it wont get tripped by the wind. Optional components include: Expanding the system to remote lock and unlock you doors. You can (and should) add a trunk monitor to protect that sub box. You can add audio sensors to hear glass break. Individual glass protection for each window. GPS tracking. If you want to it can turn your blendor on at home... it is that customizable.
Push comes to shove if you are an expert you already know Directed is the best name in car audio. If you are new, get this system it wont let you down. GET IT INSTALLED PROFESSIONALLY. Thats the only way it will be covered by warranty and is always important. Nothing can replace a independent profesional installer that you trust. This system will take a good install team 6 hours or so to complete. Demand that they soder all connections under the hood, any place that uses what they call "T taps" under the hood dosent know what they are doing.
Good luck, and stay away from my car!

Strengths: I love everything about the alarm! I coupled it with the DEI 530T Window Module and now when I arm the alarm, the windows roll up. The remote start was something I was not looking for in an alarm, but since it's been installed, I use it every day.
Weaknesses: I placed the antenna above the rearview mirror right on the glass. The 1/4 mile range is ONLY valid for open spaces.
Summary: Listed below (if it will be allowed) is a schematic I made to help others install this alarm themselves. It is specifically for a 1991 Camaro RS with a 305 TBI engine and power accessories, but should serve as a decent example to others. The Viper install guide is not too clear on a few of the Relay Satellite wires and I had to think a little more than I had expected to figure out how they were to be connected:

Strengths: Great range, nice two way comunication
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I've had an older model that didn't have the two way comunication and let me tell you it stinks not knowing if you started your car or not. I would have to activate it from the window and either listen to hear if it started or look for the muffler to shake (thus also confirming start)... With the two way & viewscreen there is no guess work.

Strengths: Works perfectly. Great remote starting range. Alarm trigger alerts on keychain have worked just as promised.
Weaknesses: Should have it installed professionally or by someone who has installed a Viper alarm before.
Summary: I had this alarm system installed after my window was broken and everything was stolen from my truck. Since then, i've been alerted (on the keychain) twice. Once was from the wind blowing a branch against the roof of my truck during the night. Also, if someone took a spare set of keys to your vehicle...this alarm will prevent them from taking your car unless you disarm it.

Strengths: Range, 2-way technology, anti-grind, quiet siren chirp(chirps quiet, but alerts loud), the options... millions of ways to make this alarm do what you want.
Weaknesses: None really to speak of.. I have had it get confused and the remote will send, but not receive a response even when standing next to the car, but it always just corrects itself in a few minutes.
Summary: This alarm is awesome! I tried a few different alarms before getting this one, and now I'm actually here on pricegrabber buying a second one for my new winter car. I won't trick people into thinking they are super easy to install because they are not, but most remote starts are not. Make sure that you have the right amount of relays, and a good soldering iron before you start. Range is awesome on this guy... I have stood in the second story of a building about 1/2 mile away and had it start my car and respond through concrete walls. The remote start works very well.. two presses of the button, and she fires right up, and you can turn the defroster on or off (if you wire using a relay), you could add window roll up, and other modules for more options. I have a proximity sensor from DEI hooked into mine which covers my car when the top is down... alarm has warn triggers, so a light tap, or a small perimeter breach will only trigger the warn, and a short blast of chirps to warn the individual to "cut it out."

Strengths: Brand Name, Expansion Capability, Ease of Installation.
Weaknesses: One of the more expensive units on the market.
Summary: This is an excellent product for a base system, and can be easily expanded for all of your security/convenience needs. This is the third one I've installed on a vehicle of mine and would not buy any other product.

Strengths: Top of the line from Viper
Weaknesses: Complicated
to hook up yourself. Id suggest prof. install
Summary: Dont forget accessories like back up battery or interface modules for factory anti-theft systems. Mine has been working fine since install but if you dont know how to hook up alarms and need professional installation, the cost of labor will bring u up to the retail price of the alarm itself at most stores in your town that include installation with thier purchase, which would also come with a warranty. Basically,its best only to buy online if your doing the install yourself and you wanna SAVE MONEY!!!!!

Strengths: Top of the line unit from a top notch manufacturer. Excellent base unit features. Eaisily expandable with add-on modules.
Weaknesses: Don't attempt installation unless you really know what you're doing.
Summary: Lack of installation manual. But then, Directed doesn't want you to buy it on the web or install yourself. Search around you will fint the information you need.

Strengths: Good distance for starting, cool remote, easy to install bipass module.
Weaknesses: Overly sensitive unless adjusted at first.
Summary: This is a great machine, the alarm works well, the remote start is good. I would definately recommend this product, especially from this buyer. Just don't make the sensors too sensitive or the wind can set it off when it is strong.

Strengths: Very installer friendly (for experienced installers)MOST RELIABLE UNIT ON THE MARKET.
Weaknesses: AM signal, if you want better range buy and FM. Most people want a backup remote too this one only has one.
Summary: Overall it delivers as promised I have installed 40 of these 791XV\'s and not one person has complained to me about it failing. It works the same from the day of installation and for years to come. DEI is great.

Strengths: remote start, 2-way pager, 1/4 mile coverage
Weaknesses: size. i'd love to have something less bulkier.
Summary: it works as it is supposed to be. a smaller size would be a great advantage since personally i just hate to carry bulky stuffs in my pocket. but it works great.
