Strengths: Small, quiet, and not too hot.
Weaknesses: No power button, unlike other LaCie models.
Summary: Before buying this model, I had one of the silver silver "Porsche" LaCie models, also 500GB. I loved it, even though it seemed hotter than I'd like. In comparison, this black model is a little less hot, only slightly larger, and at least as quiet. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the silver model's power button on the back. Other than that, both drives are very nice and quite reliable. Buy this model if you don't want to bother with power buttons and hotter drives. Buy the silver model if you want to be able to shut it off.

Strengths: Simple, fast, easy to use and function as specified. It lies flat on the table.
Weaknesses: USB connection too short for labtop but might be a plus so I have to move my labtop and the drive at the same time and will not drop on the floor as easy.
Summary: This is my third purchase of Lacie, first one is 120 GB, 2nd is 250 GB and this one is 500 GB. There is improvement on every purchase. No fancy appearance and simple to use and less expensive than other brand.
I have purchased Western Digital and Seagate but they are very fragile compare to Lacie. I drop my Lacie twice on the carpet floor and it still works fine. I drop my Western and Seagate once and they are both out of service and all my data are lost. Too expensive to send in to fix and recover data so they are not very reliable.
All my Lacies (5 years and 3 years old) are still working fine so I am purchasing another Lacie. So far it is working great, price is right and I have no complaints. I am planning to purchase another Lacie to backup my backup just in case. Would recommend this product.

Strengths: - fast upload speed
- easy use
- sleek design
- reliable product
Weaknesses: - none that I can tell thus far
Summary: This is my second LaCie External Hard Drive that I've purchased. The first one that I bought was a 100GB Hard Drive and was fantastic. This model (500 GB) has the same sleek as well as compact design, but it is also even easier to use! The product includes one click back up software, which makes keeping your files in order even easier. I highly recommend this product.

Strengths: Just plug it into your usb port and open the E drive. The easy to use software is there ready to be installed. Just direct the software to the file you want to backup.
Weaknesses: The only weakness that I have found is within my computer system. Don't try to backup files that are larger than the amount of free space you have on your main hard drive.
Summary: I have my digital keyboard hooked up to my computer through a midi interface to a midi sequencer program and the music files that I create on almost a daily basis are very large for almost any hard drive. This external usb hard drive has given me the storage space that I have needed and I love it! I definitely recommend this product. The value is outstanding.

Strengths: compact, relatively fast
Weaknesses: Nothing significant
Summary: Overall this is worth the price. It is easy to use, reliable (so far) ns set up was a breeze. The manual is useful and not terribly difficult to underdstand. On Line help is available. I recommend this drive.

Strengths: plug and play - fast - easy to use
Weaknesses: not big enough
Summary: this is a good basic drive when you need xtra capacity. This is the last american production and still a good price. I like those guys from Oregon. It was good for scsi in teh 90th. It was cool with firewire for Y2K. It is still excellent with usb.

 Compact Package with Minimal Conveniences Strengths: Small, lightweight, quiet, complete with USB cable and external power supply.
Weaknesses: No power switch, manual is preloaded onto the drive and must be saved to computer before any reformatting. Pre-formatted FAT-32.
Summary: The LaCie 500GB External Hard Drive is an easy way to add storage capacity to your computer. The drive is packaged in a black metal box measuring approximately 7.625 by 1.375 by 4.375 inches. Power and the USB connections are made to connectors on one of the 4.375 by 1.375 inch faces while a small diameter hole on the opposite end allows the light from a green LED to be seen. This LED is the only way the user knows the drive is powered up. The direct plug-in power supply has no indicator lights. The unit is small enough to place on the narrow side of an upright desktop computer.

Strengths: Small size
Weaknesses: None that I have encountered.
Summary: I appreciated the speedy delivery of the device. It was easy to hook up. I partitioned it, using half of it for backup. Backup took a long time. Is there a way I can now do incremental backups on my Mac with Leopard OS?

Strengths: Great form factor, takes up no room at all and looks the bomb. Can be stacked.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I have had 3 lacie drives in the past and have been very happy with them all, and this one is no different. I love the same things about them all, they are small, beautifully designed, can be stacked and are reliable.
From reading other reviews, it looks like the product and customer service leaves some disappointed. But the 3 that I have had over the last 5 years have served me well and continue to do so.
