Strengths: economic, large upgradable memory space (max 4G).
Weaknesses: short battery life
Summary: 2008-01-21 20:40:42 Like most of the other reviews that I have seen while trying to find solutions to problems with my Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422 Laptop, the screen would just simply black out and nothing that I could do would bring the screen back up. The Toshiba Service Center told me that the only way to get the unit to come back up is to crash it by turning off the AC power and then take the battery out, which means loosing anything that you were working on back to your last save. Toshiba knows of this problem and it has existed on other series of their laptops. The problem is that their power saving features do not work.

The Service Rep said the only way to stop this from happing is to:

Access the Control Panel

Select Power Options

Choose the last power option feature which maximises power to the computer at all times and cuts off power saving features.

For "On Battery" and "Plugged In", set "Tun off the display" and "Put the computer to sleep" to "Never".

This works, but the unit runs on max power all of the time, which causes the battery to completely run down is less than an hour even with minimal use.

If you are needing a laptop with long battery life, this is not the unit that you want to buy. This is really poor performance, especially for a lithium battery.

The only manual that comes with the unit is electronic and is made for 2 different series of laptops. The guide does not differentiate which features are on which series. The explanations of the features and utilities are useless. You are told that they exist and how to access them, but are not told how to use them. Some features are not even talked about like how to access the WiFi feature. Kind of like buying a rocket ship and being told to enter a close the door, with no instructions on what all those gadgets inside are for or how to use them.

There a numerous junk software programs that come preloaded that you have to pay additionally for after a 30 day trial period. This consumes a lot of time trying to figure out what you can get rid of safely.

All of the new machines are coming with Vista. Be prepared for a big learning curve. Vista and Microsoft Office Pro 2007 are user hostile because all of the basic tools have been so radically changed and relocated that it is just like having to learn a completely new way of doing things. If you have not had the privilage to experience Vista yet, go to a computer store, click on the Start icon and try to figure how to shut the pc down.

Strengths: Beautiful screen, entry level price
Weaknesses: Battery life, keyboard layout
Summary: Out of the box, it's fairly well equipped. There's not much bloatware or extra junk pre-installed. Like most things running Vista, this laptop could use 1GB additional RAM to make it snappier. The screen is beautiful, but the non-standard home/page-up/down/end keys take a little getting used to. The dual layer DVD writer and roomy 160GB hard drive are nice bonuses. For a bargain priced machine (less than 5 Benjamins) after rebates the purchase was a no-brainer.

Strengths: Run MS Vista Home Premium well. Have a wonderful feel of the keyboard Pre-installed Ulead DVD burning software which is add-on to me.
Weaknesses: The machine feels heavy/bulky to me anyway. The battery is not the best. not include an internal Bluetooth with this
Summary: I've only used this for five days, and so far so good, it does a great job. Word processing , Watch DVD, play music are mostly used by me and this laptop can easily handle that. Also this lappy is much quieter than my old Toshiba one which has a very noisy cooling fan.

Overall, In my opinion Toshiba is one of the best notebooks available via mainstream retail outlets for the price.

Weaknesses: too many un wanted application it was annoying deleting them, battery life is a bit short
Summary: Overall the laptop is great because of the price. if your looking for a great laptop for school or even for gaming at a low price this is the one for you.

3 Star ReviewDecent specs, average build quality
Strengths: Decent specs
Weaknesses: 1GB RAM
Summary: Toshiba is no longer the laptop king as is evident from the average build quality and the crazy blue screen that plagues the A215 series. Also, why manufacturers only give 1GB RAM on Vista machines remains a mystery. That being said, spend another $40-50 more to upgrade RAM, tweak the power saving settings to avoid unwanted shutdowns and this machine will serve you well. Don\'t forget to remove the crapware as well.

Strengths: Fast CPU, very quiet
Weaknesses: a little bit hot
Summary: This is a decent machine at the decent price. The AMD dual core is as fast as Intel. The only problem is a little hotter than the intel model. The hard disk runs very fast and quiet. The LCD screen is pretty good with short response time.

3 Star ReviewI'm very happy with it
Strengths: -big hard drive -fairly fast
Weaknesses: -1GB memory
Summary: After upgrading the memory to 2GB, this laptop runs fairly fast. It's quite and does not run too hot as my old laptop. It's great for daily use so I highly recommend this laptop if you can get a good price as I did.

Strengths: I bought this laptop for only $400 after rebates. It comes with above-average processing power and everything most people need for basic computing, entertainment and online communication.
Weaknesses: Need to upgrade the memory to 2GB or more.
Summary: For less than $500, this laptop comes with dual core/64-bit processing, 1GB DDR2 memory, 160GB HD, DVD SuperMulti drive and ATI Radeon™ Xpress X1200 graphics and 319MB of shared video memory is a decent deal.

Strengths: Cheap, Decent specs, Quiet, Runs cool, 160Gb Hard drive, DVD-RW
Weaknesses: 1Gb ram is not enough for Vista
Summary: This laptop is fairly fast. The 1 GB of ram installed is not enough to run this laptop with Vista installed. I upgraded the ram to 2 GB and this laptop has been much faster with startup and running applications. The first thing I noticed about this laptop is that is runs very quiet and cool. I usually leave my laptop running all day so this is huge plus to me. I highly recommend this laptop if you can get a good price and plan to upgrade the memory.

1 Star ReviewToshiba Satellite A215-S7422 doesn't burn CDs from iTunes
Strengths: none
Weaknesses: cannot burn iTunes CDs
Summary: I JUST purchased this Toshiba laptop and it DOES NOT allow me to burn CDs from itunes. I just got off the phone with Toshiba support and they won't admit they have a problem with their product. I got the same spill that they don't support 3rd party software. Since iTunes has practically become industry standard software, e.g, word, excel, etc. this is a REAL problem for Toshiba.

DO NOT BUY a TOSHIBA A215-S7422. I already have a Toshiba Satellite that I've had for 4 years and have not had any problems with burning CDs from itunes. So this is an OBVIOUS defect with this unit.

If you find a firmware upgrade like Dell has, please let me know. At least they ACKNOWLEDGED they had a problem and fixed it.

Strengths: 160GB Hard Drive, fast CPU
Weaknesses: 1GB memory, Screen Resolution, video card
Summary: This is my 2nd toshiba laptop. I have to say I am a toshiba man. I have been using it for almost one month. I am very happy with it. Fast AMD CPU, new operating system, DVDRW, memory card reader, basically, I got what I need.

If there is something should be better, I would say memory, 1GB is not enough for Windows vista, webcam, most fashion machines now come with a webcam, and video card, definitely a better video card.

Anyway, for this price, I can't complain it at all...

2 Star ReviewConsider another Laptop
Strengths: Good price for specs. Nice big screen.
Weaknesses: I had to return this laptop because I would get this blank screen out of no where and lose any work I was doing because I had to manually restart my computer.
Summary: Other people have had problems with the blank screen if you do a google or yahoo search for \\\'toshiba blank screen vista.\\\' I got this blank screen everyday for the 1st week I used this computer until I finally returned it. The only solution to the blank screen seems to be a temporary one and is not worth the hassle.

Strengths: Build quality, speed, very nice laptop overall
Weaknesses: none so far
Summary: Kept on of these laptops from a shipment we purchased for resale and very happy with it. Was kinda leery of switching to Vista at first as I was really used to XP but I found no problems so far. I think all this talk about Vista's "non-readiness" was greatly overestimated, I have no problems with it so far, you just need to download new drivers for printers and whatnot.

Strengths: Price is good. Screen size. Plenty storage space
Weaknesses: Batter life, Keyboard
Summary: This is an affordable laptop for your daily work - office work, surfing the web, music and movie. The screen is good. I've used it for several days and so far so good. This laptop is much quieter than my old Toshiba one which has a very noisy cooling fan. I like the media buttons for music and movies. The battery life seems a little short. Overall, it is a good laptop.

Summary: This is my 2nd Toshiba Laptop. It's a great laptop for the price. It's pretty light. So far the computer is working great, speed is good. I also like the media buttons for music and movies. The only problem I had is the battery life. The battery life seems a little short. Overall, I am satisfied with this laptop.
