Strengths: Very Compact
Weaknesses: Battery comsumption is excessive probably due to only using
2 AA batteries
Summary: I purchased an Olympus D 40 from Beach Camera on June 13 at about 9 pm cst, I received the camera on June 19 at about 10 am via fed ex ground Beach Camera was very fast at shipping and didn't pressure me to buy additional accessories, this is a reconditioned camera that looks and performs like a new camera. It was also the best price I could find,I would purchase from Beach Camera again as I was very satisfied with their service.

Strengths: Compact size (fits in shirt pocket); ease of basic use (programmed features work well); flexibility of settings and image file size/quality.
Weaknesses: Slow (i.e. F 2.8) lens; slowness of shutter response; time between shots could be faster.
Summary: The D-40 Zoom is an all around good camera. I have had two other Olympus cameras and chose this one for its combination of small size and large pixel capability. Some of the shots have been amazing, while others mediocre. Still shots are best, while high-speed action (auto racing) is hit-and-miss (i.e., good clarity and composition is a challenge as the shutter response time is noticeably slow). Objects with diagonal edges may show some aliasing (slight hash marks). The flash works for moderate ranges up to 14 feet, after which the picture becomes darker. Pictures from a boat of a lighted shore did produce very nice photos. Use of the optical zoom is often good enough, given that the 4.0 megapixel images can be further edited on your desktop. The digital zoom works well, but loses some quality. The movie mode works well, albeit that the duration of the movie is limited to approx 30 seconds rather than the available Smartmedia card memory. Use the provided 16mb Smartmedia card as a backup and buy at least a 64mb card. Two 2000 mAH NiMH "AA" rechargeable batteries last for a long time and are worth having. Overall, the D-40 Zoom is a very good camera and I've recommended it to several people ... all of whom have reported favorable results. It’s a small, useful camera that offers the ability to produce large, high quality pictures.

Strengths: Size (small!)
Resolution (4.1 Megapixel is almost overkill)
Flexibility (many modes)
Weaknesses: Reduced lens size
Somewhat complex in certain modes
Summary: This is the only microcamera out there with this kind of horsepower. I still need to figure out exactly how to perfect slow-sync mode without unnecessary blurring, but I'm sure it can be done. The glass size is smaller than the other Camedia models, but it still has their fast response time and good low light performance (unlike the Nikon 775 which I returned as garbage) 4.5 stars

Strengths: Small size and many features
Weaknesses: Power On Switch. The first two D-40's that I had each had defective Power-On switches. Third one was OK
Summary: The small size dictates the so-so F 2.8 lens. It would have been much better with the F 1.8 lens. Small and very pocket-able. Good but not great results. Digital zoom is only so-so. Other C models do better with digital zoom.

Strengths: Compact size, high resolution, features and photo effects.
Weaknesses: Optical zoom, lag time in shutter release.
Summary: The first day we took this camera to the mountains snowboarding. We took a bunch of pictures and some little video clips. I would not recommend this or any digital camera for its video capabilities since they tend to be low resolution, but it's a handy little feature in a pinch. Stick to a camcorder for those needs. Still pictures are very clear and its size makes it incredibly handy to take anywhere. I would love to see a higher zoom on a camera this size. But since I'm so hung up on the size, I will wait for the technology to come out in something smaller than what the current 10x optical zooms are sized at. There is a learning curve to using the menus, but it's features make it worthwhile learning. I would love a camera that actually took a picture when the button was pressed. I have lost some shots because of this lag. I was recently impressed with the panoramic feature. It took me awhile to realize a use for it, but I just took some really great pics and stitched them with the software and they turned out really well. The only drawback on this is that it requires an Olympus brand media card to take advantage of this function. That's worthwhile to know this before upgrading media with another brand. Overall this has been a wonderful camera. Considering alternative cameras, I would stick with this one. I have gotten much more use out of it than I would of a larger camera since it easily fits in a pocket and offers so many features and controls.

I was extremely disappointed when I got this camer ...
Strengths: Strong flash,
Manual controls over exposure,
compact size,
Sharp video screen,
Good QuickTime movies (poor audio)
Weaknesses: No protective coating over video screen,
Cheaply built,
Power On switch (lens cover door)
Plastic tripod screw at bottom of camera (can be easily stripped).
No AC/DC adapter included or battery char
Summary: I was extremely disappointed when I got this camera via mail order. I read a couple reviews in which the reviewer stated that the front of the D-40z was metal, and of course it's not. The entire camera seemed cheaply put together and not what you expect from a sub $450 camera. The menus could be more simple and most time you need to use the video screen to use some controls which eat up power. You can not turn off picture review on Auto and Program (after you take a picture it appears on the video screen), this also eats up battery power. Kodaks DX 4330 3.1 mega-pixel camera is a much better built camera (solid feeling) with easy icon menus, sharper lens and doesn't drain batteries as fast as the D-40z. The Kodak camera also has AF illumination and better audio with movies. I tested both cameras and the Kodak's picture quality matches and in some cases is better then the D-40z.

Strengths: It is great for everything. There are so many things to say about this camera! It has many different resolutions, it has video feed, it's just great.
Weaknesses: The camera doesn't come with an A/C adapter, you can't plug it when putting pictures on your computer. Once you take a picture in a certain resolution, the setting won't change after taking the picture
Summary: The camera is overall great. I bought mine from Choice One Digital. The representatives were great to work with and offered great deals on the SmartMedia cards. I recommend this camera to anyone who uses a digital camera for more than just snapping and developing pictures.

Strengths: Small, great quality, no protruding lens, quality pics, & a gazillion features. Menu interface is easy to learn, even though it has soooo many features.
Weaknesses: Batteries aren't really a weakness, as it uses only 2AA at a time (1/2 of what most use). Keep a couple more in your pocket and it's the same as the rest.
Summary: This is my 5th digital camera... I've learned that if you don't have it with you- it's worthless. This baby is small enough to take everywhere, and has features for the point-n-shooters and the advanced buffs. The Wife keeps it on "auto" and just presses the button. I love tinkering and exploring the endless features. The "My Settings" feature is incredible, and the ability to customize the menus is a streak of genius. Only things it doesn't have: hot shoe and lens accessories... I can live without them. I would have liked a "rubberized" outside, for a better grip. Here's a tip: put some of the "write right" clear plastic film on the lcd screen, to avoid scratches. The "write right" stuff is used on PDAs (palm pilot, etc) to keep the screen from getting scratched. Just trim a piece to fit.

Strengths: Great photos and more features than I'll ever need.
Weaknesses: Need a suitcase to carry enough batterys.
Summary: I wanted a compact, 4 mega pixel camera that used batteries that would be easy to obtain anywhere. I got it but it uses only two AA cells and they go dead very quickly. The camera takes very good pictures but needs a rechargeable lithium ion battery to be competitive.

Strengths: This camera is small enough to carry in your pocket, yet it has all the features you could want in a digital camera.
Weaknesses: Did not come with battery recharger or AC adapter
Summary: With it's 4 megapixel resolution, this is in my opinion the best all around camera because it's great as a point and shoot camera, yet it has features for advanced users. The camera interface is easy to learn, and the camera fits well in my hand. I love this camera and would recommend it to anyone looking to purchase a digital camera. All of my photos have come out extremely well. I could not tell the difference between digital and film with this camera.
