Strengths: Its a Real System, not another Bose wannabee.
Outstanding value at street price.
About as future-proof as can be exptected.
Sub much better than expected.
Upscaling DVD w/ DIVX, HDMI a plus.
Weaknesses: Speakers are just barely adequate. (ditto the wires)
Because it's not a single unit HT solution some complexities are introduced.
No speaker mounting hardware
Summary: A very non technical friend asked me to help him buy an HT setup. He was thinking about Bose. Now, if you are not familiar with stereos, not willing to learn just a little, or have a spouse issue (and lots of money to waste) then this is probably not the right system for you. Buy the Bose or some other lesser HT package. This system is a real component HT system. It just has everything in a single box. (heavy box... 2 people are needed to lift!) Things to remember when you purchase: If its going into a medium or large sized room buy an extra spool of speaker wire. If you want to use the HDMI you need to buy 1 more HDMI cable. (The one supplied will connect from the DVD to the receiver. You still need one to go from the receiver to the TV) If you need to mount the speakers you need to at least buy screws. I'd recommend buying mounts, but with 7 speakers that could be a bit $$$. As the speakers are the weakest link in this system you'll be thankful if you buy mounts that will hold heavier speakers for the future. Don't get me wrong. For the price you cant complain too much about the included speakers. They are adequate; if just barely so, and I don't expect them to be able to compete with pieced together systems where just moderate L C & R speakers will likely cost more than what this entire system goes for.
Some have complained that they had to actaully read the instructions to get things to work. If you agree with the "...but who actually reads..." statement then don't buy this. I was able to figure out assigning the HDMI with the quick-start guide, but it took lots of guessing as to what they were really wanting me to do before I was successful. Likewise read the screens when selecting the upscaling feature on the DVD player. They tell you how to get the picture back if you guess a resolution that your TV doesn't support.
If you're still reading then this system is probably for you. The sound isn't "awesome"... it's "good", which is much much better than most single box solutions. Volume is not a problem and the sub will rattle anything in the room (...and did!). Everything is color coded and the included microphone automatically starts the optimization routine when you plug it in... very simple! (Tip: BE QUIET during this process!!! my friends didn't quite get this concept.)
This is a great bang for the buck solution! My guess is that when you upgrade the speakers you may actually approach "awesome" and that's the beauty of a true component system. Any one part can now be upgraded with out sacrificing your investment in the rest. Try doing that with a Bose!!! Enjoy!

Strengths: 1080P, 2 HDMI Inputs that will switch for you to one HDMI output for the TV. Saves you or gives you an extra HDMI slot! Sound is awesome, great unit for the price! Pefect for BlueRay or HD-DVD!
Weaknesses: Really none, but only little thing I would say is to buy thicker speaker wire rather than use the factory!
Summary: I bought this system for our basement since we got a 46" LCD to go on the wall and we are re-doing the basement. We bought a Onkyo last year for our beach condo that was like this one, a complete home surround sound in a box, but the only real difference was it did not have HDMI inputs/output on it. We love the one at the beach and this one is better than it! Hooking one up is pretty straight forward and then adjusting the settings is up to you and your liking!
Make sure you don't have neighbors close by or the walls don't provide much insulation, cause this system will definitely make some nice and loud sound.
If you can afford this unit, I highly recommend it. The technology it has isn't going anywhere for a while!

Strengths: Powerful and clear sound. Easy to setup and particularly enjoy the zone2 feature.
Weaknesses: Speakers were heavy and required stronger than usual speaker stand.
Summary: Overall, I am very happy with my entertainment system. It's great as a home theater and a home stereo system. You can't beat this system for the price. After comparing it with other systems, the SP908 surpassed them all. I also love that I can be listening to my CDs in one room w/ volume control independently (via zone 2 feature) while my other family members are enjoying watching movies in another room.

Strengths: Great sound, high-end system.
Weaknesses: none
Summary: Got this system when I found out that my old a/v receiver had no hdmi input or outputs. Just got a HD DVR player and wanted to utilize the dvd audio to it's fullest potential. I was totally surprised at what I have been missing all these years. I can not imagine that is any system available that would be better than this one. Great job Onkyo!!!!

Strengths: Future Proof
Weaknesses: none
Summary: I did a A/B test with a audio test disk in a big box store against the Panasonic 950 htib you can't even begin to compare these two systems the sound on the Onkyo SP908 blew me way I would expect to pay at least 2k for the sound it was producing I own a 22k system myself this is my recommendation for a friend for a sub 1k system.

Strengths: Powerful sound, easy set up, stylish speakers, great sub woofer, great up-converting receiver, nice dvd player
Weaknesses: the spring binding posts on speakers, the heat generated by the receiver, bit of a power suck (not energy star by any means)
Summary: For the money, there is no better deal. I paid $770.00 shipped from Vann's. You might get a better system buying the parts separately, but this is the way to go if you are on a budget. There is no cheaper way to get great 7.1 surround sound with this powerful of a receiver and an up converting DVD player for cheaper. Onkyo has done in again for delivering high quality for low prices.

Strengths: - HDMI Audio and Video support
- Can use 1 remote to control all componets
- Sound is amazing
- Tons of connections
Weaknesses: - Speaker wire that comes with is junk. I used 12 AWG wire since I was running through the walls
Summary: I did a TON of research before purching my items for my HTS and on several forums this system got some very good reviews. The receiver is amazing and I can update the speakers in the future if I decide too. I can not imagine something sounding better but that seems to the common issue with this system. I am extremley happy with this system and glad I got a receiver that supports full HDMI. Making the connections to my equipment was simple.
I have not used the IPOD Docking station yet but will soon. Tons of great features for a great price!

Strengths: Sr605 receiver, great speakers
Weaknesses: Huge subwoofer
Summary: This set comes with SR605 receiver and HT750 speakers, DV-SP405 upconverting DVD Player and an ipod dock. The value is amazing. Set up the system and it will simply blow your mind away. The receiver can decode every HD audio esp useful for bitstreamed from Blu-Ray player. The speakers are pretty sleak although a bit big but not that bad. Subwoofer is really huge and I would say the only bad part. Speakers sound amazing and can easily match a much costlier speaker system in the market. The upconverting DVD player is also very nice and does the job beautifully. Ipod dock is also very handy. All in all, I highly recommend this.

Strengths: The surreal sound
Weaknesses: Not any...
Summary: I was just recently setting up a home theater system with a friend and checking out his audio. He had a 5.1 Onkyo, and this one just blows it away. the clarity and surreal sound makes you think you are right at that moment. The set-up was easy although the subwoofer picture which is included tells you to set it up facing out... We know that if you bounce the subwoofer then you hear some outrageous base. I also loved the microphone to balance the sound, how awesome is that not to purchase a meter, and play with it for awhile. I love this sound system, and I'm sure you will be amazed about the sound.
