Summary: I wrote a huge article but after I tried to proceed, I received an error message, and when I pressed back, everything was erase.. so here we go again!
This refrigerator in question has its pros and cons.
One strong point is that this is a beauty. I love the design. There are a few kinks that could be ironed out though.
This is one of the larger units on the market, that being said, it also sticks out from my cabinets quite a bit, though it's a personal sacrifice I had to make for the extra space.
The ice/water dispenser is a great convenience because it dispense from the door, rather than having to open the freezer (letting out the cold and bending over) every time you want some ice.
The ice dispenser is quite small, we'll just have to see how fast this machine can make the ice.
There is a flip up shelf situated next to the ice maker (located in the fridge section) which is great for being able to put taller champagne bottles, soda bottles, etc vertically instead of having to lay them down horizontally.
The lighting is a new thing I suppose, which utilizes LED's (I guess it's more energy efficient also) rather than an incandescent. It emits a bluish hue which hopefully will be softer on the eyes when one tries to go for a midnight snack.
The dual humidity control is a great feature for your perishable needs such as vegetables and herbs. They'll help keep them crisper and fresher for a longer period compared to the conventional non-adjustable humidity bins.
One thing I look for when purchasing a fridge is the retractable strip in between the doors to help create a better seal, rather than using no strip. Though there is no proven fact of which one is better, intuition just tells me ones with the strip (such as this model) is more superior in creating a better/more efficient seal.
The freezer is a bit smaller for my liking (coming from a side by side, but is great if you need space to store ONE say, huge frozen turkey. But then you would have no space for anything else. I like the fact that this model has a plastic bin rather than a wire basket so things can't leak (prefrozen(sp?) liquids)/fall through when opening/closing the freezer.
Some weakness that I have found was that some (maybe rare, maybe common, but I don't have this issue.. whew....) have issues of the doors denting/warping due to the poor stainless steel wrapping. Make sure you inspect it CAREFULLY upon delivery for this issue.
The ice maker is smaller than what I am used to, but we'll see how fast this sucker can make ice. Maybe size is sacrificed for freezing time. But if you're going to have a large party, go out and buy ice at the grocery store by the huge bags and you can fit it in your large freezer bin :).
One thing I'd ask GE to change (including beefing up the support behind the stainless steel to resist denting better) is the hose behind the fridge where the ice maker water line connects to your house line. The plastic line behind the fridge is very flimsy so don't bother buying the stainless steel water lines because it is waaaay overkill. The plastic line on the fridge will be broken before the stainless steel water line from the house connection even shows any signs of wear. So save a few bucks and get just the cheapER (not cheapEST) set (should be about ~$6-$7).
At this price and point, this fridge is pretty much an aesthetic improvement. If you enjoy your side by side, then this isn't for you. As for me, I wanted something newer (design-wise).
