Strengths: Sleek with clean lines. Best part is the built in lifetime subscription traffic for free. Ease of use.
Weaknesses: Somewhat sluggish performance and length of time to recalculate routes.
Summary: 2007-12-01 10:08:07 Purchase Price:
$309 after manf. mail-in rebate
Initial Thoughts:
The unit is very nice right out of the box. Very sleek and modern looking. My main reason to pull the trigger on this product was the built in lifetime subscription traffic for FREE! Most manf.'s will charge an extra ~$60/yr. so I thought that this unit would pay for itself in a few years. This units is very well made.
What's Included:
Unit itself
Sd card with maps (US, Canada, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico)Sleek looking mounting arm with ball joint to adjust to
your viewing needs
Car charger
House charger
Traffic antennae
Usb cable
Soft pouch
Supplementle plastic piece with double sided tape for
states that do not allow windshield mounts.
CD instructions
Performance:
The unit started right up right out of the box. The interface was easy to use and I was able to quickly set the user settings to my needs rather easily. The text-to-voice has been accurate so far and I like how it gives me a heads up for before a turn at the 1 mile mark. The unit is sluggish at times with changing screens (touch screen) and recalculating routes can be slow depending on where you are. There's a recalibrating function for the touch screen that initally helped. I like how it uses Navteq which is a leader in GPS maps in the US.
Final Thoughts:
Overall the unit is impressive considering how many functions are built into this unit when you compare it to other units in it's class. Navigon is still new to the US market so I expected some performance lags but I expect future units to get better. Since I don't have experiences with other GPS units, other than reading other reviews, I would give this unit a 9 out of 10 with room for improvement.

Strengths: Sleek design; Lifetime Traffic; Lane Assist/Reality View; Zagat reviews; able to connect to mobile phone via Bluetooth
Weaknesses: Possible routing error; Slight GPS positional error.
Summary: After using TomTom v.6 on my PDA for several years, I was looking forward to something more compact without all the cables hanging from my dashboard. I had began looking for a different alternative. I had originally used a Garmin Streetpilot a while back and did not like the street lookup as some streets were impossible to find. The TomTom had served me well. When the Navigon 7100 was introduced, I was salivating over the design and features that it offered. The Navigon 7100 sport a 4.3" color display that was bright. Color was not washed out as in my PDA (Axim x51v). Several times using the TomTom I took the wrong lane on the freeway as the voice command was not clear as to the direction or lane I was to take. This was aggravating at times when the exit was far in between. With the Navigon 7100, this annoyance is soon to be in the past as the Reality View and Lane Assist will pop up ahead of time to let me know which lane to take. Additionally, the Navigon also has lifetime traffic update that allows me to bypass possible traffic congestions and choose alternate routes. This has been beneficial as driving around town in rush hour can add on additional 30min-hours. One drawback I've came across this weekend was that the GPS position was not 100% accurate. The end destination was off by 5-6 houses. All in all, I'm satisfied with the device. I have yet to try the POI/Zagat and bluetooth feature. I can't wait for future Navigon products.

navigon 7100 gps
Strengths: line assistant, traffic, bluetooth
Weaknesses: slow, routing problem
Summary: I thought I got a great unit back in December 2007 with
premium GPS future but it appeared that this Navigon has some issues. First of all it is slow, it takes sometime between pressing an icon on the scrren and unit reaction.
Secondly, the route planning kinf of wird. I compered Navigon's route with Google maps and Navigon sometimes
chooses very abnormal routs.
The rest of the unit seems to be fine.

Strengths: Good display, free lifetime traffic updates, text to speech, and lane assistant
Weaknesses: Somewhat sluggish, cumbersome interface, traffic not available in all areas
Summary: On the whole, the Navigon 7100 is a nice device and, at the sale prices intermittently available, is a potentially great value. I say potentially, as one of the things that makes it a great value is the free lifetime traffic updates, but this functionality is not available in all areas (including the one where I spend most of my time). I've previously used a Garmin Nuvi 200, and my take is that the Garmin unit had faster response (to touchscreen), faster re-routing, generally better route calculation, and a more intuitive interface. Granted, the Nuvi was the first real GPS device I used, so perhaps in my mind the interface was superior simply because it was what I'd grown accustomed to. The Navigon 7100 is a nice looking device, and I think both the display and the audio are top notch. If I spent more time in the larger cities where the traffic updates would be useful, I'd say this device was a must-have. Navigon provides a list of these cities here: www.navigon.com/static...

Lots of problems
Strengths: nice form factor, free traffic
Weaknesses: Worst routing of the product class, PIO system has lots of bugs, severe customer support problems, not actual text to speech
Summary: I've had this unit long enough to fully test out several functions. yes it has nice feature like free traffic (albeit the cheaper and less efficient clear channel). Yes the form factor is sleek. But the old adage is beware of form over function and the 7100 proves the adage true. Routing on the 7100 has many many bugs. If yo set it side by side with Garmin and TomTom as I did you see both Garmin and TomTom have quirks and small subjective difference, but the Navigon 7100 seems to b in a wold of its own where longer routes on slower roads are preferable to highways with no traffic, where the fast route is the slowest, and where the optimal looks like a jigsaw puzzle of immposible turns. heaven forbid you should deviate from the meanderings suggested by the 7100, it will not accept them and recalculate for a very long time and will endlessly tell you to u-turn. In contrast the Garmin and TomTom give yo a couple of prompts to go back to their suggested route and then recalculate. The "Zagat" reviews which crowd out normal Points of interest are a novelty. If you are driving to an assignment , a customer, or on a afternoon drive I suppose one in a million people will say -- hey why don;t I play golf today, let's see if their is a course nearby. The rest of us would like to know if there is gas station, a Cirucit City or Best Buy to pick up something, or a McDonalds to grab a burger. The software doesn't work well for this compared to the competition. Text to speech is actually "half text to speech." Only major roads are included. Side streets, which one needs the most, are not. Again, a failing the comparable Nuvi's and TomToms don't have. Most of these problems are the result of software bugs. But if you get in touch with Navigon support you quickly realize it is very shallow and very poor in the US. I was willing to put up with several of the bugs, hopeful they would be fixed in the near to mid future, but the final straw was an issue with the provided memory card. navigon had promoitd this with a first in its class capacity of 4 gbs. When looked mine was two. this was a $35 downgrade. I contacted Navigon US support. They refered me to Navignon in Germany, who referred me back to Navigon US, who then referred me to the retailer explaining some dealers shipped with parts missing. My box was from Amazon.com and was factory sealed. I thought I had some one in a million anomaly. I then found a forum with everyone upset about the same thing. Navigon gave most users a card with half the capacity Navigon advertised. They also refused to budge. Worse than the $30 ripoff, was the fact that the 2 gbs cards were completly full and would mean that needed software fixes, updates would be unlikely since Navigon would have to tell customers to replace their cards (and exposing the switch to cheaper cards). If I bought a computer that the maker said had a 400 gb drive, and then found that the maker had switched to a 200 gb drive I would expect the maker to make me whole. Navigon proved they could care less about customers. If yo are considering any navigon purchase I strongly suggest looking for two indicators: 1) an update to fix the bugs on this device 2) a resolution of the card switch. If they do this that means they had some bumps in rolling out their presence here in the US and fixed them. If they don't it means their products should not be considered .

Navigon 7100 Inadequate. Fatal Error.
Strengths: None when compared to the TomTom
Weaknesses: Very slow to receive satellite signals; incomplete instructions; reality images infrequent; Bluetooth weak, etc.
Summary: 2007-11-28 16:52:53 I had this unit a few days and found it very inadequate. It takes forever to find sufficient satellite signals even though it uses more satellites than some other brands. Twice it received a Fatal Error (had to reset). When approaching a Y in the road, it did not state to veer right or left; it was silent. The TomTom, for the same route, states, "stay in the right lane and take the next right; then, stay in the right lane".

Navigon 7100
Strengths: Nice graphics. Easy to use. Looks good and fancy.
Weaknesses: Frame much larger then the screen. Not always perfect. Other softwares can do a better job
Summary: Bought this GPS after trying out the 2100 because of the traffic features. Tried it for 1 month( previous experience with TomTom and Mio ). It gave some different directions then other GPS but they all took about the same time to reach the final destination ( trying different settings ). The feature I liked most was it gives speed limits on major highways and gives proper lane shifts. Traffic option was good but not always what I expected. Graphics are nice. The text to speech is good but it very hard to understand the street names as the voice is too robotic (pronounciation is not correct). A lot of time it tells you to proceed on the road for the next 9 miles when there are turns and you could probably miss them. I am going back to my TomTom. Good try Navigon.

Navigon 7100
Strengths: Nice 3D display and quick satellite reception.
Weaknesses: Touch screen is not very responsive and slow to respond to input. User interface not very friendly
Summary: I bought this unit and used it for about a week before I returned it. For the price of the unit I found to many problems with it. It did not automatically turn on or off when it was powered by the cigertte lighter cord. I was unable to connect the unit to the manufacuters web site to update it. The small alpha and numeric touch screen was difficult to use at times. You had to have small fingers and hit the screen pad several times to get it to take. It moved slow between the menu screens compared to a friend of mines Garmin. I plan on buying the Garmin 660 and giving it a try based on the reviews I have read.
