Summary: I recently purchased this set after researching several similar sized sets; the Pioneer 6010FD and the Panasonic 58PZ700U. Overall, the Pioneer had the best picture quality; I just couldn't justify the $1700 price premium for what I considered a minimum improvement over the Samsung. The Panasonic picture was good but seemed dim to me; I even viewed it in several different lighting environments. The Samsung was the logical choice for me as it was a great value proposition; fantastic PQ, numerous inputs, beautiful design all at a great price.
The PQ on this set is just outstanding, especially HD content. HD DVD and BluRay media are just incredible; you really have the feel that you are looking out of your window, it's just that realistic. Video games using the PS3 and Xbox360 takes gaming to a whole new level. The colors are eye popping and of course playing on a 58" screen in great.
Out of the box, the plasma is set to dynamic, also known as "torch" mode as the contrast level and brightness are set to maximum. Luckily, this PDP has a variety of picture controls allowing you to fine tune your set. One nice feature is that each inputs' picture can be adjusted and set to memory for that specific input.
Aesthetically, the set is beautiful; high gloss bezel with a matching base and silver accents on each side. A major convenience is the swivel base; you can rotate the panel 20 degrees right or left.
There are a couple of negative issues with this set; poor audio quality (not an issue if you use an external system), toggling through inputs with one button on the remote, and the heat this unit generates. I have this panel in a fairly large bedroom (17' x 22') and I noticed a temperature increase. Great if you need to heat your room in the winter, not so great for us Floridians.....
Finally, Samsung gives you several tools to deal with image retention. Some manufacturers recommend a break in period for PDP's, ranging from 100 to 1000 hours. While Samsung does not state this necessity, I would recommend a minimum of 100 hours of break in. I noticed immediate IR, even with the contrast level and brightness turned down below 50. After running the breakin programming, I have noticed little to no IR.
I am extremely happy with this purchase; this PDP was purchased from Newegg for $2799 plus $99.99 front door shipping. Compared to other similar sized sets, you can't beat the Samsung for quality and design, as well as the 2 year warranty.
